Contemporaneous reports identified the book on the shelf behind Usha Vance as Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit. A small figurine was visible in front of it. The background detail drew attention, but it does not establish who put the book there or what Vance thinks about its subject.
What book was on the shelf behind Usha Vance?
The book was identified as Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit, according to The Daily Beast and Futurism. The Daily Beast described it in the upper-left area of the video frame, with a small figurine in front.
The Daily Beast reports that the book was first published in 1992. It also quotes Gore’s foreword to the 2006 reissue: “Global warming is real, it is getting worse rapidly, it is mainly caused by human beings, we need to act now to avoid the worst of its consequences.”
What was the video about?
The video announced a planned trip to Greenland. Vance described meeting people and learning about the territory and its culture, according to the contemporaneous accounts. Futurism reported that the plan was later scaled back after Danish officials said the delegation had not been invited. That is context about the March 2025 announcement, not an update on current travel plans.

Does the book reveal Vance’s political views?
No. The book’s appearance in a background shot is not evidence of who selected or placed it, why it was on the shelf, or whether its presence was intentional. The reporting does not establish the exact filming location. Futurism floated the Naval Observatory residence as a guess, not a confirmed location, and noted that furnishings could have a mundane explanation.
The reliable takeaway is limited: a book by Al Gore was visible behind Vance during a video announcing a Greenland trip, and people noticed it. Treating that shelf detail as a political signal or proof of Vance’s personal position goes beyond what the reporting establishes.
