On October 14, 1966, students from the universities of Kent and Sussex staged a rough anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Hastings, 900 years after the original battle. Filmmaker Alan Wootton recorded the event at Hastings Town Council’s request. Decades later, his son helped bring the footage back to light; English Heritage restored it as a 12-minute film and announced a public screening at Battle Abbey in October 2026.

What happened at the 1966 reenactment?

The gathering marked the 900th anniversary of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Students from the universities of Kent and Sussex took part. The Guardian reported 500 students, while other accounts describe the group more generally as several hundred, so the precise total is not consistent across reports. The Guardian’s account describes makeshift costumes and wooden or hardboard weapons painted silver.

This was a commemorative student spectacle, not a formal reconstruction grounded in a documented study of medieval clothing or combat. Its improvised costumes and props show how participants staged the anniversary in 1966; they should not be treated as reliable evidence of what soldiers wore or carried in 1066.

Who filmed the lost footage?

Hastings Town Council asked local filmmaker Alan Wootton to record the celebrations. His son Cliff, then 12, and Wootton’s brother Den helped with sound recording, according to English Heritage. Cliff later recalled being in the middle of the event while helping his father.

Years afterward, Cliff mentioned the family’s film reels during a visit to Battle Abbey. The rediscovery led to work with English Heritage to restore and condense the material. The Smithsonian Magazine reports that the family had 300 reels and that the restored version runs for 12 minutes.

What does the film show—and what can it tell us?

The footage preserves a local anniversary celebration and the participants’ improvised approach to staging a famous battle. English Heritage site manager James Witcombe called it “an incredible time capsule.” That phrase captures the film’s value as a record of the 1966 event and its atmosphere; it does not make the reenactment a source for detailed claims about medieval warfare.

The historical event being commemorated was fought in 1066 between the army of English king Harold II and the invading force of William, duke of Normandy, during the Norman Conquest. The 1966 gathering had a different purpose and different participants: university students came together to mark the anniversary, rather than to recreate the original battle with historically verified equipment.

Where can you watch the rediscovered film?

English Heritage announced that the restored film would be screened at Battle Abbey during the October 10–11, 2026 reenactment. Its announcement, dated October 6, 2026, describes a planned event; because those dates have passed, it does not establish whether another screening is scheduled now. The sources cited here do not confirm permanent online access or a physical-media release. Check English Heritage’s announcement for any current access information.

Why is English Heritage seeking surviving participants?

English Heritage said it had no record of the original foot soldiers’ names and invited people who took part to come forward. Peter Sampson, identified in reporting as a student foot soldier, recalled the encounter as “a God-almighty punch-up”; that is his personal description, not a documented account of every participant’s experience. The surviving footage and memories may help identify people in the film, but the published accounts do not establish a complete roster.
