Spotify Live was Spotify’s live-audio room service, not a current standalone app. It launched as Spotify Greenroom in 2021, was renamed Spotify Live in 2022, and let hosts run real-time audio conversations while listeners joined, chatted, or were invited to speak. Spotify sunset the standalone Spotify Live app in 2023, so descriptions of its app and features are historical.
What Spotify Live was
Spotify Live was a service for live, spoken-audio discussions. A host could open a room, set its subject and tone, moderate participants, and select which listeners could speak. Other users could listen in, communicate through text chat, and—when invited—join the room as voice speakers.
The product began as Spotify Greenroom, introduced in 2021 for iOS and Android. Spotify later changed the name to Spotify Live and connected parts of the live experience to the main Spotify app.
How a Spotify Live room worked
1. A host created and organized the room
Hosts chose a topic and established the room’s tone. Moderation tools allowed them to manage who participated and decide which listeners could come onstage. Spotify for Artists described the service as a way for artists and creators to connect with fans in real time.

2. Listeners entered as an audience
People could tune in to an active room and follow the conversation in real time. The launch description also included tools for finding upcoming rooms, so users could look for scheduled discussions rather than relying only on a room already being live.
3. Participation happened through chat or voice
- Text chat: listeners could post messages using the in-app chat controls.
- Voice participation: a listener could be brought onstage by the host and speak to everyone in the room.
That combination made the format different from ordinary on-demand podcast listening: the audience could remain passive, communicate by text, or become part of the live conversation.

Greenroom became Spotify Live in 2022
On April 12, 2022, Spotify announced that Greenroom would be renamed Spotify Live. The change also divided the experience between two places:

| Where users accessed it | What Spotify described at the time |
|---|---|
| Main Spotify app | Listeners could find selected live programming through a creator’s podcast page or an artist page. |
| Standalone Spotify Live app | Users could use the more interactive functions, including chat and joining the host onstage; independent creators could still go live there. |
Spotify said the initial programming inside the main app was limited to selected original shows. These details describe the 2022 rollout, not a current product layout.
Who could use it?
Greenroom launched for iOS and Android and accepted Spotify account credentials. Spotify’s June 2021 launch announcement said the service was available in more than 135 markets. That was a launch-era availability statement and should not be read as a current coverage figure.

The shutdown of the standalone app does not, by itself, establish the present availability of every later live feature inside Spotify.

Is Spotify Live available now?
The standalone Spotify Live app is not currently available. It was sunset in 2023. Historical explanations of Greenroom or Spotify Live can still clarify how Spotify’s experiment with live audio worked, but they should not be treated as instructions for downloading or using an active app. Spotify’s later live-audio experiments and any current in-app features would need to be evaluated separately from the discontinued service.
