The September 2024 headline describing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as having a “digital and emotional” affair with New York magazine writer Olivia Nuzzi went beyond what the public statements established. New York magazine said Nuzzi acknowledged a personal relationship with a former reporting subject relevant to her 2024 campaign coverage. Nuzzi said it was not physical and should have been disclosed; Kennedy’s spokesperson said Kennedy had met her once, for an interview.
What New York magazine and Nuzzi said
New York magazine said Nuzzi had acknowledged a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to her campaign reporting. The magazine called it a violation of its standards for conflicts of interest and disclosure. Vanity Fair reproduced the magazine’s statement, which said the relationship occurred while Nuzzi was reporting on the 2024 campaign.
Nuzzi said the relationship “was never physical” and that she should have disclosed it “to prevent the appearance of a conflict,” according to Gizmodo’s September 2024 report. She also said that during the personal communications, she did not directly report on the subject or use him as a source, as the Associated Press later reported.
What Kennedy’s representative said
Kennedy’s spokesperson said he had met Nuzzi once, for an interview, according to Gizmodo’s contemporaneous report. In its October 2024 follow-up, AP noted that Nuzzi had not publicly confirmed Kennedy’s involvement. The spokesperson’s statement and Nuzzi’s account are attributed claims; the available reporting does not independently establish every detail of their private communications.

Why the disclosure mattered
The central issue was the journalist’s relationship with a former reporting subject while she covered the presidential campaign—not a public finding that a particular story was false. Nuzzi acknowledged that disclosure was warranted to avoid the appearance of a conflict, even as she said she did not report directly on the subject or use him as a source during the personal communications.
New York magazine said that had it known about the relationship, Nuzzi would not have continued covering the campaign. The magazine’s concern about its conflict and disclosure standards is distinct from whether her published work was accurate or biased.

What the review found and what happened next
On October 21, 2024, AP reported that New York magazine’s internal review and an investigation by an outside law firm it enlisted found no issues with Nuzzi’s accuracy or bias. AP also reported that the magazine and Nuzzi agreed to part ways. Those findings do not erase the magazine’s stated standards violation: they address accuracy and bias, while the disclosure issue concerns the relationship and the appearance of a conflict.

In November 2025, TheWrap reported that Nuzzi’s memoir American Canto recounts her account of the relationship, referring to the other person as “the politician.” Intimate details in a memoir are the author’s recollections, not independent corroboration. The available reporting does not authenticate private messages or settle every disputed detail.

For readers assessing the headline, the key distinction is between the magazine’s documented disclosure and standards response, Nuzzi’s own description and denial that the relationship was physical, the spokesperson’s account of one interview, and later memoir claims attributed to Nuzzi. The phrase “digital and emotional affair” is headline framing, not a finding established by the magazine’s review.
