What did the filming prop contain?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, quoted by ComicBook.com on January 2, 2025, Fincher said he thought the prop contained a seven- or eight-pound shot bag and a wig. He recalled that the wig had a little blood in it so some hair would stick together when Morgan Freeman opened the box.
Fincher said the crew had researched what Paltrow’s head might weigh as a proportion of her body mass, which informed the weight they put in the box. He framed the details as memory—“I think”—rather than a definitive inventory of the prop. He also called the rumor that the box held a prosthetic head “entirely ridiculous.”

Why does the film keep the contents offscreen?
Fincher’s explanation was simple: “you don’t need to see what’s in the box if you have Morgan Freeman.” He recalled that Freeman opened “16 or 17” boxes during filming. The performance carries the scene’s horror without a direct image of Tracy’s head.
