The viral image of Moon Knight demanding “his goddamn money” from Dracula is an edited meme, not a panel from a Marvel comic. The original scene comes from “Tower of Shadows,” a Moon Knight story in Solo Avengers #3 (1987): he is investigating a lead for the West Coast Avengers when the Shroud puts him through a dangerous test.
Where the Moon Knight meme comes from
The source is “Tower of Shadows,” the Moon Knight segment in Solo Avengers #3, published in 1987. The issue belongs to an anthology series featuring stories about individual Avengers, alongside recurring Hawkeye appearances. James Whitbrook identified the meme’s source in a January 21, 2022 Gizmodo article. His account is secondary reporting; the comic itself was not independently examined for this explanation.
What Moon Knight was doing in the original story
Following a West Coast Avengers lead
In the story as Whitbrook describes it, Jack Russell—better known as Werewolf-by-Night—brings Moon Knight a lead on a criminal mastermind the West Coast Avengers are pursuing. Moon Knight had just joined the team, and the lead takes him to a castle-like location in the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California.
Facing the Shroud’s traps
The location is a test set by the masked vigilante called the Shroud. Moon Knight has to get through spiked walls, dart-firing suits of armor, and trap doors before he reaches him. Moon Knight briefly dazzles the Shroud with a flash bomb; the Shroud then reveals why he arranged the challenge.

Being asked to lead the Night Shift
The Shroud wants Moon Knight to join the Night Shift, a nocturnal, supernaturally themed team that includes Werewolf-by-Night. He is looking for a potential replacement to lead the group. Moon Knight turns down the offer.
Why Dracula and money appear in the meme
The Dracula-and-money premise belongs to the edit, not the original scene. In “Tower of Shadows,” Moon Knight is not confronting Dracula or trying to collect money from him: the encounter is about a lead for the Avengers and the Shroud’s attempt to recruit him. The meme reframes the image as a confrontation over an unpaid debt, which is why the caption can be mistaken for comic dialogue when separated from its source.
