What Deadpool said
In a clip reported by Gizmodo on August 27, 2024, Deadpool tells a story about Cinderpool arriving late because he had to read “every single page in the terms and conditions when he signed up for Disney+.” Wolverine says, “I don’t get it.” Deadpool replies, “They do.”

The punchline turns on “they”: Disney, the company arguing that the signup terms applied to the lawsuit. Gizmodo described nervous laughter and said some viewers were appalled; that is the outlet’s account of audience reaction, not a measure of how all guests responded.
What lawsuit the joke referred to
The case was brought by Jeffrey Piccolo after his wife died following an anaphylactic reaction after a meal at a restaurant in Disney Springs, Florida. It did not involve a death at Disneyland in California. Disney Springs and Disneyland Resort are separate destinations, and the performance took place at Disney California Adventure, part of Disneyland Resort.

The legal connection was Disney’s attempt to invoke an arbitration clause associated with Piccolo’s Disney+ free-trial signup. Arbitration generally means resolving a dispute outside a public court proceeding. The joke mocked the argument that accepting the streaming service’s terms could affect where a separate wrongful-death claim was heard.
The reports differ on when the restaurant incident happened: Gizmodo describes the meal as occurring in 2019, while WDW News Today’s August 2024 report places it in October 2023. Those accounts do not resolve the discrepancy, so the date should not be treated as settled here.

What Disney did about arbitration
Before Gizmodo reported the joke, Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro said the company would waive its right to arbitration and let the matter proceed in court. WDW News Today reported his statement on August 19, 2024, and updated its account on August 22. D’Amaro said Disney wanted to take a “sensitive approach” to expedite a resolution for the family.
That decision changed Disney’s position on the forum for the case; it did not establish liability, decide the allegations, or amount to a court ruling on the merits.

Where the performance fit
Disney announced “Story Time with Deadpool” as a limited-time offering at Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure. In its July 26, 2024 Disney Parks Blog announcement, the company said guests could join Deadpool for stories and described the tales as family-friendly. That announcement establishes the show’s context at the time, not its current schedule.
