Amazon launched miniTV in India on May 15, 2021, as a free, advertising-supported video service inside the Amazon shopping app. It did not require a Prime subscription or a separate app at launch. The service later combined with MX Player to become Amazon MX Player; in 2026, that successor is being integrated into Prime Video.
What Amazon miniTV offered
miniTV was Amazon India’s free video-on-demand service. Advertising funded the catalogue, so “free” meant viewers could watch without paying for a subscription, while accepting commercial breaks. Amazon described the launch as its first free video service built directly into a shopping experience.
The initial catalogue included web series, comedy, technology news, food, fashion, beauty and short-form creator programming. Launch-era partners and creators included TVF, Pocket Aces, Ashish Chanchlani, Amit Bhadana, Round2Hell, Harsh Beniwal, Prajakta Koli, Aakash Gupta, Trakin Tech and Kabita’s Kitchen. These are examples from the 2021 launch announcement, not a guarantee of what remains available today.

When and where did miniTV launch?
The launch date was May 15, 2021. At first, miniTV was available in the Amazon shopping app for Android phones. Amazon said iOS and mobile-web support would follow in subsequent months. Calling it a standalone streaming app from day one is therefore inaccurate.
miniTV versus Prime Video in 2021
Although both services appeared in Amazon’s entertainment strategy, they had different business models and catalogues at launch.

What happened to Amazon miniTV?
Amazon later combined miniTV with assets acquired from MX Player. In 2024, the resulting service was named Amazon MX Player, retaining a free, ad-supported focus. Amazon’s explanations are available in its accounts of the miniTV–MX Player combination and the Amazon MX Player platform.

What Amazon MX Player is in 2026
Amazon MX Player remains the successor to miniTV and continues to offer free viewing with advertising. Its programming strategy is broader than miniTV’s original creator-led emphasis, covering scripted drama, thrillers, reality shows, micro-dramas, anime, international dubbed programming, MX Fatafat mobile-first stories and MX Vdesi Korean, Chinese and Turkish content.
Amazon’s 2026 announcement lists access through mobile devices, connected TVs, the Amazon shopping app, Prime Video, Fire TV, JioTV and Airtel Xstream. How the Prime Video integration works
Amazon is adding Amazon MX Player’s free catalogue to Prime Video in phases. A “Free To Me” experience is intended to let non-Prime viewers find free, ad-supported programming alongside Prime titles, rentals and add-on subscriptions. Prime membership may be needed for particular Prime Video benefits, but it is not required for supported MX Player content.
The MX Player Android app has been refreshed as “MX Player by Prime Video.” During the transition, web, iOS and living-room users may be redirected to Prime Video applications, while the Android app may continue operating. Amazon says viewing history, preferences, watch lists and favourites are intended to carry over. Details are documented in Amazon’s Prime Video and Amazon MX Player integration update and MX Player’s device-transition guidance.

Finding former miniTV content today
- Open Prime Video and look for the Free To Me area where the phased rollout is available.
- On Android, check for the app identified as MX Player by Prime Video if it is still supported on your device.
- On web, iOS or a television, follow any in-app redirection to Prime Video; menus are not uniform during the migration.
- Check that a title is labelled free before watching. Prime Video also displays paid Prime, rental and add-on content.
- Sign in with an Amazon account or mobile number where required. MX Player support said social-media login was being deprecated by July 1, 2026; the live app should be treated as authoritative.
Free access still includes advertising. Paying for Prime does not automatically make Amazon MX Player programming ad-free. MX Player’s support pages explain the Prime-membership requirement and current product and login updates.
Quick Recap
Why the miniTV name can cause confusion
- It was not a paid Prime service: miniTV launched as free, ad-supported programming separate from Prime Video.
- It was not a standalone app at launch: the first release lived in the Amazon shopping app.
- It was not simply discontinued: its free-content proposition continued through Amazon MX Player.
- It is not the current brand: references to miniTV describe the 2021 service; current access depends on Amazon MX Player’s phased Prime Video integration.
