Your encoder’s total outgoing bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth available to it. For YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, that means an encoder bitrate of 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, or 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are stream settings—not recommended ISP plan speeds—and YouTube advises testing your upload and the actual stream before going live.
Start with the stream settings, not the number of hours
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance gives bitrate recommendations by video codec, resolution, and frame rate; it does not set a separate instantaneous bitrate for a 24/7 broadcast. A stream running all day needs the same bitrate as one using the same settings for a shorter program. Longer operation does make a stable connection and a realistic preflight especially important, but it does not create a 24/7 bitrate multiplier.
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates. They are not a promise that a speed-test result equal to the figure will remain stable, and they are not an ISP plan recommendation. YouTube Help’s live encoder settings lists the following values:

Codec matters. YouTube’s recommended values for AV1 or H.265/HEVC are 6 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60, 10 Mbps at 1080p30, and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Use the row for the codec your encoder actually sends; do not treat one codec’s figure as a universal YouTube requirement.

How much upload capacity should the connection have?
The outgoing stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed the upload bandwidth available to it. The video bitrate is only part of that total: audio also uses bandwidth, and other applications or devices sharing the connection can compete for upload capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips advise checking upload speed and ensuring the stream’s total bitrate stays within available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips do not specify a universal extra percentage of headroom, so there is no official multiplier to apply to the table.
In practice, choose the encoder settings first, then check whether the connection can sustain them with expected network use in progress. An advertised plan speed or a single speed-test result is not proof that the connection will hold that rate continuously. A wired Ethernet connection can avoid some wireless variability at a fixed workstation, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by the ISP.

Test the exact setup before committing to a continuous stream
- Set the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec. Pick the combination the channel will actually use, then set the encoder to the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. For example, 1080p at 30 fps using H.264 calls for a recommended encoder bitrate of 14 Mbps.
- Check the connection’s upload performance. YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test from the streaming device and connection, not a different network or a device that will not be used for the broadcast.
- Run a realistic preflight. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, while other expected household or workplace network use is present. A static devotional image may behave differently from footage with movement, but do not lower settings on the assumption that all bhajan streams are static.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended settings and watch YouTube’s live control room status during the test. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; a speed test alone cannot show how the full encoder-to-platform path behaves.
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS as the secure protocol choice. These encoder settings help meet YouTube’s ingest guidance but do not substitute for sufficient upload capacity. YouTube also transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers, so their playback bandwidth is not added to your broadcaster upload requirement.
When to lower settings or change the connection
If a realistic preflight is unstable at the chosen settings, reduce the stream’s resolution or frame rate and use the bitrate recommendation for that new combination, then test again. Alternatively, address the connection’s sustained upload capacity with the ISP if the desired encoder bitrate cannot be maintained. A faster router, cable, or software setting cannot create upload bandwidth that the connection does not supply.

Audio-led programming with a static image may make a lower-resolution configuration acceptable for the channel’s needs, but that is a practical quality choice, not a separate official bitrate rule for devotional content. Choose based on the visual material viewers will see and validate the complete setup.
