For the most useful short watch list, see Deadpool, then Deadpool 2, then Logan. Add season 1 of Loki if you want background on the Time Variance Authority (TVA). The first two films give you Wade Wilson’s story and relationships; Logan adds emotional context for Wolverine. You do not need a full X-Men or Marvel Cinematic Universe marathon.
The essential watch order
- Deadpool (2016): Start here for Wade Wilson, the series’ tone, and the relationships that carry into the sequel.
- Deadpool 2 (2018): This is the direct follow-up. Its supporting-character relationships and mid-credits time-travel sequence provide the most immediate context for the next film.
If time is tight, these two films are the priorities. Director Shawn Levy has described Deadpool & Wolverine as “a real odd couple, buddy cop movie,” with its central story focused on the two title characters. The Walt Disney Company’s interview with Levy discusses the film’s approach.

Logan (2017): Wolverine’s emotional history
Logan gives weight to Wolverine’s sacrifice and death, making it a worthwhile third film if you want more than the direct Deadpool setup. But do not treat the Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine as simply continuing from Logan: coverage distinguishes the 2029 setting of Logan from the new film’s Wolverine context. D23’s overview provides that timeline qualification.
Loki season 1: optional TVA background
The TVA is part of the film’s setup, so season 1 of Loki can help explain the organization. It is optional background, not an established prerequisite for following the central Deadpool-and-Wolverine story. TheWrap’s watch guide identifies the TVA and the relevant franchise connections.

How much of the franchise do you need?
You can keep the preparation focused. The two Deadpool films establish the character and the most direct continuity; Logan adds emotional resonance, while Loki adds TVA context. The follow-up also draws on franchise characters and references, but Levy has said its core remains centered on its two leads. A full X-Men or MCU viewing order is therefore unnecessary for this watch list.
If you are choosing by available time, use this order: the two Deadpool films first; Logan if you have time for one more film; then Loki season 1 for optional TVA background.
