Spoilers for Dune: Part One (2021); no events from Dune: Part Two are revealed.
At the end of Dune: Part One, Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, have survived the destruction of House Atreides and reached a Fremen group led by Stilgar. Paul has just killed Jamis in a duel. The Fremen agree to take Paul and Jessica into their community, but the fight for Arrakis—and the question of what Paul’s visions mean—remains unresolved.
Why Arrakis and its spice matter
Arrakis is a harsh desert planet, but it is the only source of melange, or spice. Spice enables interstellar travel and affects consciousness, making control of its supply a source of enormous political power. The Fremen are Arrakis’s native people, living on a world governed by outside forces.
House Harkonnen had controlled Arrakis for 80 years, according to TIME’s account of the film’s setup, before the Emperor transferred stewardship to House Atreides. The change looks like a prestigious appointment, but it leaves the Atreides exposed to their rivals on a planet whose most valuable resource is at stake.

Why House Atreides was sent there
Duke Leto accepts the Emperor’s order to take over Arrakis, despite suspecting that the move is dangerous. He hopes to build an alliance with the Fremen, whose knowledge and strength could give House Atreides support beyond its formal authority over the planet. The transfer is also a political trap: the Harkonnens attack the Atreides with covert Imperial support.
Who Paul and Jessica are—and what the Bene Gesserit has to do with it
Paul Atreides
Paul is the son and heir of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica. He experiences troubling visions, which become clearer after exposure to spice. In those visions, Chani—a Fremen woman—appears to him.

Lady Jessica and the Bene Gesserit
Jessica is Paul’s mother and a trained member of the Bene Gesserit, an influential order. The Bene Gesserit has pursued a long-term breeding plan intended to produce a figure called the Kwisatz Haderach. Jessica was expected to bear a daughter but chose to have a son instead. The Bene Gesserit is the order Jessica serves; it is not another name for Jessica.
How the Atreides fell
The Harkonnens launch a devastating attack on the Atreides with covert Imperial help. Dr. Yueh, the Atreides physician, betrays the household because the Harkonnens are holding his wife. Duke Leto and most of the Atreides household are killed. Paul and Jessica escape into the desert.

Is Paul the Fremen’s prophesied leader?
Some Fremen believe Paul could be the Lisan al-Gaib, a prophesied liberator from off-world. That belief is not independent proof of his destiny: the Bene Gesserit planted the prophecy among the Fremen generations earlier as part of its political preparations.
At the same time, Paul’s increasingly vivid visions leave open the possibility that more than expectation and manipulation is at work. The film does not settle whether he is destined to lead, how much his visions reveal, or how the prophecy will shape events.
