What to Do When Disney+, Hotstar, or JioHotstar Isn’t Working

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether the problem affects one title, one device, one network, or the whole service. Then try the least disruptive fixes: test another title, restart the app and device, check your connection, update the app, and verify your account and location. Reinstall only if those steps fail. The service may be branded Disney+, Hotstar, or JioHotstar depending on your country, so use the app and support site for the service shown in your account.

Identify what is failing before you reset anything

Check the problem systematically. An app that will not open, a failed sign-in, and a video that buffers have different likely causes. A service-wide outage cannot be confirmed from a generic troubleshooting page; check the official support channel for your region before assuming one is happening.

What you notice What it may indicate Useful first check
The app will not open, or crashes App data, an outdated app or operating system, or device compatibility Restart the device, then update the app and device software.
You cannot sign in Incorrect credentials, an account issue, or the wrong regional service Confirm the email or phone number tied to the subscription and try account recovery.
The app opens, but videos will not play Network, account, location, cached data, or playback protection Try another title and check whether playback works on another device or network.
Only one title fails A title-specific playback issue, plan or profile restriction, or regional availability Try another episode or title and check availability in your region and plan.
Only Wi-Fi fails Router, ISP, DNS, signal, or network filtering Test another app on the same Wi-Fi, then try a phone hotspot if practical.
A VPN or proxy is in use The service may be unable to verify your location or may block the connection Turn off the VPN or proxy temporarily and try again.
Only the TV fails TV app or firmware, HDMI, HDCP, or an attached receiver or soundbar Test the title on a phone or browser; if that works, check the TV setup.
Other people and devices in the household are affected A wider service, account, or home-network issue Check official support information and whether other internet services work.

Disney’s streaming troubleshooting guide identifies device compatibility, unstable internet, outdated software, router or modem problems, cached data, and connected display components among common causes.

Try these quick fixes in order

  1. Check another title. If other videos play, focus on the title, episode, profile, plan, or regional availability rather than resetting the entire device.
  2. Check for a service problem. Look at the official support channel for your country. An outage tracker can offer a secondary signal, but it does not confirm the cause or replace official support.
  3. Force-close and reopen the app. If you are using a browser, refresh the page, then sign out and back in if needed.
  4. Restart the streaming device. Use its restart control if available; otherwise shut it down fully and start it again.
  5. Test the connection. Try another app on the same network. If possible, test the service on mobile data or a phone hotspot. Streaming over mobile data may use a large share of your allowance, so check your plan before using it for an extended period.
  6. Update the app and device software. Check the app store for an update and the device settings for an operating-system or firmware update. Supported devices and minimum software requirements vary and can change; consult the service’s current support page for your country rather than relying on a universal device list.
  7. Clear cached data, if available. Start with cache, which is less disruptive than clearing all app data. If the problem continues, consider clearing data or reinstalling; either may sign you out, and local app information or downloads may be removed.
  8. Turn off VPNs, proxies, or unusual filtering temporarily. Try playback again on your ordinary connection.
  9. Check your subscription and simultaneous streams. Stop playback on other devices, verify billing and plan status, and try again.
  10. Reinstall the app if it still fails. Reinstalling is a more substantial reset than closing and reopening, and you will need to sign in again.

For a router or modem reset, first close the app and restart the streaming device. If several apps or devices have connection trouble, power-cycle the network equipment: turn it off, unplug the modem and router, wait until they are fully powered down, reconnect and start the modem, then the router, and wait for the connection to stabilize before restarting the streaming device. This briefly disconnects other devices in the home. Disney’s official troubleshooting steps also recommend power-cycling equipment and testing other apps.

If the app will not open or keeps crashing

Work through the app-specific checks before repeatedly reinstalling it:

  1. Fully close the app and reopen it.
  2. Restart the phone, TV, console, or streaming device.
  3. Install any available app update, then check for a device operating-system or firmware update.
  4. Clear the app cache if the device offers that option. If it still crashes, clearing data or reinstalling may help, but can sign you out and remove local information.
  5. Sign in again, or test the service on another supported device or browser to determine whether the fault is limited to one device.

Controls differ by platform. Android phones, tablets, and Android TV may offer separate Clear cache and Clear data settings; clearing data is the more disruptive option. iPhone and iPad may not offer a general cache-clearing control, so deleting and reinstalling the app can be the practical reset. Apple TV and some smart TVs may likewise rely on reinstalling. On Fire TV, Roku, Samsung and LG TVs, consoles, or set-top boxes, menu names and available controls depend on the model and firmware. Use the device maker’s instructions rather than applying a single menu path to every device.

Disney provides platform-specific directions in its cache and data guidance and separates app-opening help from playback troubleshooting in its app troubleshooting page.

If videos buffer, freeze, or play at low quality

A fast headline download speed does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Signal strength, interference, congestion, the number of devices using the network, routing, and the streaming device itself can all matter. Disney notes that distance from the router, connected-device load, ISP outages, and high viewing demand may affect playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move closer to the router or try Ethernet if your device supports it.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streams while testing.
  • If the service offers a quality setting, try a lower setting to see whether playback stabilizes.
  • Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or a hotspot as a short diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent solution.
  • If other apps also fail on Wi-Fi, investigate the router, ISP, DNS settings, or network filtering. If only this service fails, focus on its app, account, location, or title.

If playback works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, the home network, ISP, DNS, or router is a stronger suspect. If it fails on both, the cause may instead be the device, app, account, title, region, or service. For persistent connection problems, Disney’s streaming guide recommends testing other apps and checking network equipment.

If the website is blank, stuck loading, or will not play

  1. Refresh the page, then sign out and back in.
  2. Use an updated, supported browser. Check that JavaScript and cookies are enabled.
  3. Clear browser cache and cookies, then try again.
  4. Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy or script extensions, and content filters to test whether one is interfering.
  5. Try a private window only as a diagnostic. If playback fails there, return to a normal window: private browsing can prevent DRM-protected video from playing.
  6. Try another browser or device. If video fails only in the browser, the issue is less likely to be the home internet connection itself.

Disney’s streaming guidance calls out JavaScript and cookies. The Hotstar FAQ warns that private or incognito browsing may interfere with DRM-protected playback.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

If you cannot sign in or playback says you are not authorized

Separate an authentication problem from a playback problem: if you cannot get into the account, start with credentials; if you can sign in but cannot play, check entitlement, plan, title availability, location, and stream limits.

  • Confirm the email address or phone number associated with the subscription, and enter the password manually rather than relying on a saved one that may be out of date.
  • Use the account-recovery or password-reset route if the credentials do not work. Disney refers to these account credentials as MyDisney login details in its app-opening help.
  • Make sure you are using the service and regional app connected to your subscription. The name and account arrangements vary by country.
  • Check whether a mobile app store, telecom provider, cable or streaming bundle, or other partner manages billing. That partner may control payment, entitlement, or cancellation.
  • Check whether the subscription is active, payment succeeded, and the title is included in your plan. Some titles or playback features may depend on the plan or profile.
  • If activity looks unfamiliar, secure the account and sign out of unused devices if account controls allow it. Never give a password or verification code to someone claiming to provide support.

If a VPN, proxy, or region message blocks playback

Content availability depends on location. A VPN, proxy, unblocker, private-relay service, or unusual DNS setup can make the service see a different location or block access. Turn these services off temporarily and retry on your ordinary connection. Do not use location tools to bypass regional restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel, hotel or workplace Wi-Fi, school networks, and public connections can route traffic through another region or filter streaming services. If you are on one of these networks, test a trusted ordinary connection where available. The Hotstar support page asks users detected behind a VPN, proxy, or unblocker to turn it off. Older Hotstar guidance discusses geographical restrictions in an India-specific context; that information should not be treated as a rule for every Disney+, Hotstar, or JioHotstar market. See the Hotstar FAQ for that market-specific guidance.

If too many devices are streaming or the subscription is not working

A “too many devices” message may mean playback is still running elsewhere, a previous session did not close cleanly, or your plan’s stream limit has been reached. The limit varies by service and subscription; do not assume one universal number.

  1. Stop playback on every device you know is using the account, including TVs, phones, browsers, consoles, and streaming sticks.
  2. Close the app on those devices and sign out of ones you no longer use if account controls allow it.
  3. Wait briefly, then sign in and try again.
  4. Check subscription status and billing, especially if a partner manages the plan.
  5. If the error persists despite stopping other streams, contact official support.

Disney’s error-code directory identifies code 75 with the maximum-device or stream condition. The Hotstar FAQ also advises checking whether another premium video is already playing on the account. Repeated rapid login attempts can contribute to throttling or suspicious-activity errors; pause retries if one of those messages appears.

  1. Restart the TV and streaming device.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable, then try another HDMI port.
  3. Connect the streaming device directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing a soundbar, AV receiver, splitter, or capture device.
  4. Try another compatible cable, and install available TV and streaming-device firmware updates.
  5. Test the same title on another device. If standard-definition playback works but 4K Ultra HD or HDR does not, check compatibility across the source device, display, cable, and any equipment in between.

Disney specifies HDCP 2.2 for 4K Ultra HD and HDR playback in its streaming troubleshooting guidance. That requirement is not a blanket condition for every video or playback situation.

If a downloaded title will not play offline

  • Confirm the device is signed in to the account that downloaded the title.
  • Check available storage and whether the title is still present in the app.
  • Reconnect to the internet so the app can validate the download if required, then try playback again.
  • Update the app; if necessary, delete and download the title again.

Download availability and rules can vary by market and plan. Consult the relevant regional Disney+ help topics rather than assuming that an offline download remains available indefinitely or has the same limits everywhere.

What Disney+ error codes mean

These are the meanings or categories listed in Disney’s official error-code directory. Exact behavior can vary by market, platform, and service implementation, so use the code to choose a first check—not as proof of a single cause.

Code Meaning or likely category First response
14 Incorrect password Re-enter your credentials or use password recovery.
39 Content is not authorized for the account Check subscription, profile, and title availability.
41 Playback problem Retry, test another title, and restart the app or device.
42 Trouble connecting to the internet Test another app or network and check the router.
43 Trouble playing the selected content Retry, then test another title or device.
73 Content unavailable in the current location Turn off VPN or proxy services and check regional availability.
75 Maximum number of devices or streams reached Stop playback on other devices and try again.
83 General “something went wrong” error Restart, update, clear app data if needed, and escalate if it persists.
91 or 92 Requests temporarily throttled Stop repeated attempts and try again later.
93 Suspicious account activity detected Secure the account, pause repeated attempts, and contact official support if necessary.
1026 General app or service problem; exit and retry Close the app, restart the device, update, and try again.
142 Trouble connecting to the service Check official service information, network, app, and account.

A general playback code can have several causes: for example, a service interruption, outdated app, corrupted local data, device issue, or title-specific failure. If the suggested first response does not help, continue with the relevant device, network, account, or location checks above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact official support

Contact the support channel for the service and country shown in your account once the relevant checks fail. Include enough detail to distinguish an account issue from a device or network fault:

  • Your country and the service name shown in the app or subscription.
  • Device type and model, plus operating-system or firmware version.
  • App version if visible; for browser playback, the browser and version.
  • The exact error message or code and the affected title or episode.
  • Whether other titles, devices, apps, or networks work.
  • Whether you tested mobile data or a hotspot, if available.
  • The date and approximate time the issue occurred, and the steps you already tried.
  • A screenshot or short recording if safe and appropriate; hide personal or payment information.

Use the official regional support site, such as Hotstar Support for the market it serves, or Disney’s fix-a-problem help section. If a third party bills the subscription, its support may be needed for payment or entitlement problems.
