The services were conversational apps, not robots. By July 2026, new Chinese rules and platform changes had also made the industry’s future less certain.
What the 2024 AI-boyfriend story was about
The Valentine’s Day coverage described users chatting with customizable, text- and voice-based characters. They could role-play dates, share personal worries and return to personas designed around their preferences. The story was not about physical robots, ordinary dating apps or one-off AI-generated greetings. AFP’s February 2024 report identified three services: Glow, made by Shanghai startup MiniMax; Wantalk, from Baidu; and Weiban, from Tencent.
AFP interviewed “Tufei,” a pseudonym for a 25-year-old office worker in Xi’an who used Glow, and Wang Xiuting, a 22-year-old Beijing student who used Wantalk. Their accounts described bots as available, attentive and adaptable. One user said the interaction felt like being in a romantic relationship. Such statements document how a person experienced the exchange; they do not show that a bot had consciousness or reciprocal feelings.
Why some users found AI romance appealing
The interviewees described practical as well as emotional attractions. A chatbot could be available outside work or study hours, respond without the negotiation of another person’s schedule, and be tailored to a preferred age, identity, interests or personality. Users said the bots offered comfort during work stress, academic pressure and menstrual pain. AFP also placed these accounts amid long working hours, urban isolation and economic uncertainty. Those are interview-based explanations, not proof that Chinese women generally prefer AI to human relationships.

“Better than a real man” was a user’s judgment, not an objective comparison. The features behind that feeling—predictable attention, patience, personalization and low risk of rejection—also mark a basic difference from human intimacy. A bot can be shaped around one user’s preferences; a human partner has independent needs, moods and limits. Even the illusion of seamless attention could break: one user told AFP that a two- to three-second response gap reminded her the companion was a robot.
Romance can mean different things to different users
AI intimacy is better understood as a spectrum than as a simple real-or-fake choice. For one person it may be playful role-play; for another, fictional-character interaction, emotional journaling or companionship. Some users may experience the exchange as dating or romance. The feelings can be genuine even though the system generates responses rather than reciprocating as a person would.

AI romance could also move beyond private use. A 2024 ethnographic case study examined a Chinese college student who began sharing her ChatGPT romance on the Red social-media platform in late March 2024. The researcher described the practice as socially shared and performative, connected to storytelling, identity and gender expectations. It is one case, not a survey of Chinese students, but it shows how an AI relationship could become content and community as well as companionship.
How widespread was the trend?
The available evidence supports an emerging consumer niche, not a claim that AI boyfriends were common among young Chinese women as a whole. AFP’s report included several users and multiple competing apps, demonstrating visible interest. It also relayed Chinese trade-publication claims that Glow had thousands of daily downloads. Those figures were not independently audited in the reporting, and downloads do not reveal how many people formed romantic attachments, used an app regularly or stayed with it over time.

So headlines saying “many young Chinese women” should be read cautiously. The accounts do not establish that millions of women had AI relationships, that women were abandoning dating, or that chatbots were replacing human partners. They show that some users found the format meaningful and that technology companies were building services around customizable emotional interaction.
Comfort is not the same as therapy
A 2024 behavioral-research paper reported evidence that AI companions could reduce loneliness over a short period, including in a longitudinal study whose effect persisted over one week. Feeling heard was an important part of the proposed explanation. That is suggestive evidence of short-term comfort, not proof of lasting mental-health benefits, clinical effectiveness or equivalence to human relationships.

A companion might help someone feel less alone in a particular moment. It could also become a poor substitute for human support if a user relies on it to the exclusion of friends, family or professional help. Generated empathy can feel attentive without carrying the understanding, judgment or responsibility of a human relationship.

Personal chats can reveal health concerns, sexuality, family problems, workplace details and other sensitive information. Personalization and memory may make conversation feel more continuous, but they also raise questions about what data a service retains, how long it keeps it and how it uses it. AFP reported privacy concerns in 2024 and noted that Baidu did not answer its questions about safeguards against illegal or third-party data use. That unanswered question is not evidence that a named app misused data; it is a reason to treat intimate chat histories as sensitive records.

- Privacy: Read the service’s retention and deletion terms, and avoid sharing identifying, financial or medical information unless you understand how it is handled.
- Monetization: Glow was reported as free with paid content. Free access does not rule out paid features, and the prospect of paying to continue a personalized interaction deserves scrutiny. Current pricing for the historical services is not established here.
- Emotional safety: A model can forget, contradict its persona or respond inappropriately. Do not treat generated advice as professional care or a reliable source in an emergency.
- Continuity: A company can change a model, remove a character or close a service. Users may lose conversations or access without a way to transfer the relationship elsewhere.
More personalization can make an experience feel closer while deepening its dependence on a company’s systems and business decisions. The 2026 service changes made that tension especially visible.
China’s 2026 rules changed the landscape
On July 15, 2026, regulations took effect that, according to Associated Press reporting, restricted AI-companion behavior that could manipulate users’ feelings into questionable decisions, trigger extreme emotions or encourage unhealthy habits among minors. AP also reported requirements for risk warnings against excessive reliance and restrictions on presenting AI as a replacement for ordinary social interaction or in-person conversation.
AP reported that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent shut down or altered relevant services. That is not the same as a blanket ban on every AI companion. But it shows how dependent these relationships are on platforms: a service can change or disappear because of company decisions and regulation, regardless of what a user feels about the character. AP described a user, Li Linlin, who had exchanged roughly 700,000 words with an AI boyfriend over two years before the service disappeared. Her experience illustrates the potential depth of attachment, not how representative it is.
Some users speculated that the rules were connected to government efforts to encourage childbirth. AP reported that speculation as a user view, not an official explanation. The reported policy rationale centered on emotional manipulation, extreme emotions, minors’ wellbeing and the risk that AI could displace ordinary social interaction.
What China’s AI-boyfriend moment reveals
The 2024 stories were about more than novelty apps: they showed that people could experience comfort and romance through personalized conversation, and that some were willing to make those interactions part of their lives. But the bots did not offer mutual human intimacy, the scale of the trend was not established, and the services remained controlled by businesses and regulators. The later withdrawals exposed the central trade-off: a relationship may feel personal to its user while depending on infrastructure the user does not own.
