If a climbing partner goes missing or is seriously injured, stop the activity, keep the rest of the party together, and contact the emergency or mountain-rescue service for your location as soon as you can. Give dispatch your location first, follow its instructions, and do not start an uncoordinated search or attempt a technical rescue.
If your climbing partner is missing
Keep the party together
Stop climbing and account for everyone who remains. Do not split up or leave an injured person alone to search. If it is safe, return together to the partner’s last known location and wait there. The National Park Service advises against searching off trail for a missing group member; a search needs coordinated planning and personnel.
Contact the local rescue authority promptly
Call the emergency number or contact the park dispatch or mountain-rescue authority responsible for the area. The procedure depends on jurisdiction. For example, Mountain Rescue England and Wales advises callers in the UK to dial 999 or 112 and ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue. That instruction is not universal: use the local procedure where you are and follow the dispatcher’s directions.
Give responders useful details
Share when and where your partner was last seen, their planned route or destination, likely deviations, and the surroundings. Describe their clothing and equipment and mention relevant medical conditions. Provide the vehicle and trailhead details, the number of people in your party, and a callback number. Parks Canada notes that dispatchers may ask about identity, location, injury information, the vehicle, trailhead, and likely route.

If your partner is injured
Check for danger and call for help
First check whether the scene is safe for you and the rest of the party. Do not create another casualty by entering hazardous terrain. Contact the local emergency number or rescue authority for a serious injury, inability to walk, altered consciousness, breathing problems, major bleeding, or any situation in which you are unsure that the person can be evacuated safely. Give the exact location if known, or your best estimate, and follow dispatch instructions.
Give care within your training
Avoid unnecessary movement and monitor the person’s breathing and consciousness. The National Park Service Outdoor Emergency Plan says, “Move to another location only if there is an imminent threat to life.” The American Red Cross also advises against unnecessary movement and recommends keeping an injured person from becoming too cold or too hot. For major bleeding, the National Park Service outdoor plan advises applying direct pressure. Keep the person as warm and sheltered as conditions permit, and make your party visible to rescuers.

Decide who can safely summon help
If there are several companions, capable people can alert authorities while others stay with and monitor the injured person, provided leaving is safe. If only two people are present and no one can call, the remaining partner must weigh the injury and terrain against the risk of going for help. Stabilize the casualty as far as practical without exceeding your training. National Park Service guidance says to stay with the injured person if possible; if leaving is necessary, make them as comfortable as you can with warm clothing, shelter, and food.
Leave technical rescue to trained teams
Do not attempt a rope lowering, an improvised carry across hazardous terrain, or a helicopter approach unless you are trained and directed by rescue professionals. Mountain Rescue England and Wales and Parks Canada describe technical rescue and evacuation as work for rescue teams, not routine tasks for companions.

What to tell emergency dispatch
Start with your location, especially if you are calling by mobile and the connection could drop. Be ready to give:
- Coordinates, if available; the mountain, route, or trail name; and the nearest landmark.
- The last known location, terrain, and access conditions.
- When the incident happened and what occurred.
- The number of people in the party and the number of injured people.
- The nature and apparent severity of injuries, plus first aid already given.
- Relevant medical conditions, clothing, and equipment details.
- Your name and callback number, and any immediate hazards.
Dispatch questions and procedures vary by jurisdiction. Give the clearest information you have; do not delay a call because you cannot answer every question.

If phone or radio contact fails
Mountain cell coverage can be unreliable, and repeatedly searching for a signal can drain a phone. State your name, callback number, and location early in a call. Keep the phone available for a return call and conserve its battery. Use the local park or rescue agency’s published procedure.
If you cannot call, use a satellite communication device if you have one and it is appropriate to the area, or have someone alert authorities when it is safe to do so. A satellite phone, personal locator beacon (PLB), or satellite messenger may help, but contact is not guaranteed; Parks Canada cautions that satellite phones and PLBs cannot be relied on absolutely.

Plan communication before the climb
Where cellular reception may be absent, National Park Service guidance suggests considering a PLB. Parks Canada also notes that satellite phones and PLBs may be useful, while warning that they are not fully reliable. Before relying on any emergency communication device, check whether it is suitable for the route and region, how it is activated, whether it requires a subscription, and how it shares coordinates. Consider whether it supports two-way messaging or only sends a distress alert, and whether its battery can meet your needs in cold conditions. The guidance cited here does not rank particular devices or establish that any model will work at a specific mountain location.
Rescue access and timing depend on terrain, weather, location, and available teams. Keep the emergency procedure for the area in mind, and defer to local dispatch and trained rescuers once contact is made.
