The available episode recaps describe two different tests of Nolan under pressure: in Season 1, he reasons through a suspected biological threat and helps secure a surrender; in Season 7, Oscar kidnaps him before Nyla and a teenager’s drone help bring about his rescue.
What happens to Nolan in the Season 7 finale?
In the Season 7 finale, Oscar kidnaps Nolan and threatens to kill him. Oscar is trying to recover diamonds hidden after a Las Vegas jewelry-store robbery. Nyla gets help from a teenager whose drone helps locate and rescue Nolan, interrupting Oscar’s attempt to kill him. Oscar escapes, leaving that threat unresolved. The episode also reveals that Monica has an immunity deal, opening another unsettled storyline. These events are described in TV Insider’s May 13, 2025 recap and TV Guide’s recap.
What Nolan does in the Season 1 finale
The Season 1 finale centers on a potential terrorist threat involving a suspected hemorrhagic virus. During the response, the rookie exam is put on hold. Nolan and Bishop investigate a dead man at a bus station; Bradford is exposed while protecting Chen; and officers pursue suspects. TVLine’s April 16, 2019 recap says Nolan reasons that the suspects will use back roads and talks one into surrendering. The episode ends with Bradford collapsing after leaving quarantine—not with a scene that establishes a later career mistake for Nolan.

How the finales connect—and where the claim goes too far
| Finale | Nolan’s situation | What the ending leaves unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | He reasons about the suspects’ likely route and helps persuade one to surrender. | Bradford collapses after quarantine. The recap does not identify this as a setup for a career mistake Nolan later avoids. |
| Season 7 | Oscar kidnaps and threatens him; Nyla and a teenager’s drone help save him. | Oscar escapes, and Monica’s immunity deal points to further conflict. |
The clearest connection supported by these accounts is character-based: Nolan remains a resourceful officer, but his work continues to expose him to serious danger. The Season 1 recap describes his judgment during a case; the Season 7 recap describes a kidnapping and rescue. Neither establishes a particular Season 1 career decision that Nolan later avoids, or says the Season 7 finale confirms such a connection.
What the showrunner previewed before the finale
In an April 18, 2025 interview with TV Insider, showrunner Alexi Hawley said: “I think ultimately it will relaunch potentially some laid aside storylines, but also just really put Nolan in sort of primal jeopardy and then also just see where our station might be headed in Season 8.” His comment previewed danger for Nolan and possible storylines ahead; it did not describe a career mistake or a decision originating in Season 1. TV Insider’s interview provides the context.

Bottom line on the Season 1 career-mistake theory
The title’s claim is not supported by the episode accounts cited here. They establish Nolan’s actions in both finales and the danger he faces in Season 7, but do not identify the supposed major career mistake or show that the Season 7 finale confirms he avoided it. Treat that connection as an interpretation unless the relevant scenes establish it directly.
