On July 26, 2025, the Moon was a very thin waxing crescent, with about 5% of its visible disk illuminated in the cited U.S. city calendars. The date fell shortly after the July 24 new moon. The crescent’s appearance and the Moon’s rise and set times depended on where and when you observed it.
What phase was the Moon on July 26, 2025?
It was a waxing crescent. “Waxing” means the illuminated portion was growing after the new moon; the July 24 calendar entry marks that new moon. On July 26, only a slender arc of the Moon’s Earth-facing disk was lit by the Sun.
How much of the Moon was illuminated?
Two city calendars put the illuminated fraction near 5%, with slightly different figures because the calculation is tied to a date and time convention:
- Seattle: timeanddate.com lists 5.3% illumination on July 26, calculated at lunar noon. Seattle July 2025 Moon calendar.
- Appleton: timeanddate.com lists 4.8% illumination on July 26, calculated at lunar noon. Appleton July 2025 Moon calendar.
These values support describing the Moon as about 5% illuminated, not a single globally exact percentage. The U.S. Naval Observatory explains that its daily phase and illuminated-fraction values are computed for noon in the requested time zone: USNO data service and USNO Moon phase information.

When and where could you see it?
There is no one universal moonrise or moonset time. The July 26 calendars list Seattle’s moonrise at 7:44 a.m. and moonset at 10:04 p.m. local time; Appleton’s are 7:29 a.m. and 9:41 p.m. local time. These are city-specific examples, and the illumination percentage calculated at lunar noon does not mean the Moon was visible at noon.
For a useful answer for a particular observer, specify the city or coordinates and the time of observation. Local rise and set times, as well as the crescent’s orientation in the sky, vary with location and observing time. Why does the crescent look different from place to place?
The phase describes how much of the Moon’s visible disk is illuminated; it does not fix the crescent’s angle in your sky. Your horizon, location, and the time you look affect its apparent orientation and whether it is above the horizon. The cited calendars establish the phase and approximate illumination for July 26, but not a single sky view that applies everywhere.

“What phase is the Moon today?” has a different answer on each date. For a current or future date, use a calendar or an astronomical service that takes the relevant date and location into account. NASA/JPL’s educational Moon Phases worksheet also describes using a phase wheel to match a phase to a selected date; it is a learning aid rather than a requirement for observing the Moon.
