On November 17, 2025, the Moon was a waning crescent: a narrowing crescent of sunlight, with the illuminated portion shrinking as the Moon approached new Moon. The U.S. Naval Observatory’s 2025 phase table places last quarter on November 12 at 05:28 UT and new Moon on November 20 at 06:47 UT, bracketing that date. USNO phase table
What a waning crescent looks like
A waning crescent is the slim, shrinking crescent phase between last quarter and new Moon. The Moon is not producing its own light: sunlight illuminates half of it, while the portion of that bright half visible from Earth changes as the Moon moves in its orbit. NASA’s Moon phases guide
The crescent’s tilt and orientation in the sky vary with the observer’s location and viewpoint, so there is no single universal picture of how it appears.

| Phase | Date and time (UT) |
|---|---|
| Last quarter | November 12, 2025, 05:28 |
| New Moon | November 20, 2025, 06:47 |
November 17 lies between those dates, on the waning-crescent part of the cycle. NASA gives the cycle’s approximate length as 29.5 days and lists the phases in order: new Moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. When to look for it
As a general pattern, a waning crescent often rises very early in the morning, before sunrise, and sets in the afternoon, before sunset. That is guidance rather than a forecast for a particular place. The time the Moon is visible depends on its phase, the time of year, and the observer’s location. NASA’s Moon phases guide

For the exact moonrise and moonset on November 17, use the U.S. Naval Observatory’s one-day data service with the observing location and time zone. It calculates rise, set, transit, and phase information for a requested date and place. The service reports phase and illuminated fraction for noon in the requested local time zone; a percentage or clock time without that context would not be a universal value. The USNO also documents its date and location inputs and lunar outputs in its API documentation.

To see how the Moon’s appearance changes over time, NASA JPL offers a printable Moon Phases Calendar and Calculator activity.
