The official Wonder Man trailer sets up a Hollywood story inside the MCU: Simon Williams, an aspiring actor, pursues the lead in a remake of a superhero movie called Wonder Man, while veteran actor Trevor Slattery becomes part of the story. That premise makes the series self-aware about entertainment in a way that invites comparison with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law—though “most meta” is an editorial reading, not an official Marvel ranking.
Why the trailer feels meta
Simon is not simply trying to become a superhero. Disney describes him as a struggling actor seeking the lead in legendary director Von Kovak’s remake of the in-universe superhero film Wonder Man. The series therefore puts an actor’s ambitions, auditions and film production inside a universe where superheroes already exist.
That Hollywood-within-Hollywood setup gives the trailer two layers: the MCU series follows Simon Williams, while Simon himself is trying to land a role in a movie that shares his name. The official description establishes the remake and audition premise; what that means for Simon’s identity or eventual powers is not settled by the premise alone.
How the comparison with She-Hulk holds up
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law also builds its premise around a familiar MCU reality: Jennifer Walters is a lawyer specializing in superhuman cases, and her life is complicated by being a Hulk. Its self-aware quality comes from bringing superhero life into a professional setting; Wonder Man instead foregrounds acting and the machinery of making a superhero movie.

Both premises let Marvel look at its own world from an unusual angle, but they do so differently. The Wonder Man trailer’s meta impression comes specifically from the fictional film being made within the MCU—not from any confirmed ranking of Marvel series or a claim that the show will break the fourth wall.
Trevor Slattery connects the story to the MCU
Trevor, played by Ben Kingsley, is described by Disney as an actor whose biggest roles may be behind him. His involvement links the series to earlier MCU appearances while fitting its focus on performers and careers.

That connection is useful context, not a prerequisite. In a D23 interview, the creative team said Trevor’s previous appearances tie the series to the wider MCU, but viewers do not need to have watched every Marvel film or series to enjoy it. Co-creator and director Destin Daniel Cretton described Andrew Guest’s pitch this way: “The first time I heard Andrew’s pitch for Wonder Man, it sounded like a show I’ve never seen before…not just in the MCU, but anywhere.”
Is Simon Williams a superhero or an actor playing one?
The setup contains both an in-universe movie role and an MCU protagonist. Simon auditions to play Wonder Man in Von Kovak’s remake; that does not mean the series is only about a fictional character inside another fictional film. Disney identifies Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams as the series’ aspiring actor and the protagonist of Wonder Man.

The available official premise distinguishes Simon’s audition from the movie he hopes to join. It does not, by itself, explain every detail of his superhero identity or how the series handles the relationship between the role and the character.
Release and episode details
Wonder Man is an eight-episode series. Marvel’s official trailer announced its premiere for January 27, 2026, at 6 p.m. PT, exclusively on Disney+; Disney’s January schedule said all episodes would stream from the premiere. The premiere date has passed, so this is a released series rather than an upcoming title.

Where the comics fit
Marvel’s trade paperback Wonder Man: The Saga of Simon Williams is an optional route into the character’s comic-book history, not a guide to the series’ plot. Marvel lists the paperback’s publication date as March 27, 2024, and says it collects material including Avengers (1963) #9 and Wonder Man (1986) #1.
