The first footage from The Mandalorian and Grogu, shown to attendees at D23 2024, featured Din Djarin and Grogu amid snowtroopers and Imperial AT-AT walkers on a snowy world. Lucasfilm did not identify that world as Hoth, so the familiar ice planet remains a possibility raised by the imagery—not a confirmed setting.
What was shown in the D23 footage?
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni introduced a sizzle reel during the Friday-night showcase. Lucasfilm’s August 12, 2024 recap described Din and Grogu facing snowtroopers, Imperial AT-AT walkers in the snow, Zeb Orrelios in action, and Grogu traveling with two tiny Anzellans.
The presentation was an audience-only first look as described in Lucasfilm’s recap, not an official public trailer release. Favreau told the crowd, “It’s the last D23 before the movie comes out so we had to put something together for you.”
What TheWrap reported
TheWrap’s August 9, 2024 account supplied additional sequence details from the showcase: Din enters a room and fights snowtroopers, while a later scene has Mando and Grogu commandeering a walker, sliding down an icy cliff, and encountering AT-ATs. Those are details from TheWrap’s attendee report, rather than a shot-by-shot account published by Lucasfilm.

Was the snowy planet Hoth?
Neither Lucasfilm’s recap nor TheWrap names the planet. The imagery—snow, Imperial walkers, and snowtroopers—may bring Hoth to mind, but it does not establish that the scene takes place there. The soundest description is simply a snowy world; calling it Hoth as a fact goes beyond what the accounts confirm.
How the footage fits the film
Lucasfilm’s current film page says the movie picks up where the Disney+ series left off. Its premise places Din and Grogu in the period after the Empire’s fall, when Imperial warlords remain and the fledgling New Republic seeks their help.
