It found no evidence that an algorithm changed prices in real time. Instead, its concerns focused on how standing-ticket price tiers and “platinum” seats were presented to buyers. Ticketmaster gave voluntary undertakings to improve information for future sales, without admitting wrongdoing or liability.
What happened in the Oasis ticket investigation?
Oasis reunion-tour tickets went on sale through Ticketmaster on 31 August 2024. Fans reported difficulty buying tickets and surprise at prices. The CMA later described cheaper standing tickets selling out before more expensive standing tickets became available.

On 5 September 2024, the CMA opened a consumer-protection investigation into whether Ticketmaster used unfair commercial practices and whether customers received clear, timely information about prices and how they could vary. The regulator stressed that opening an investigation did not mean Ticketmaster had broken the law. The CMA’s chief executive, Sarah Cardell, said: “It’s important that fans are treated fairly when they buy tickets, which is why we’ve launched this investigation.”
The CMA published its concerns on 25 March 2025, then announced Ticketmaster’s undertakings and the closure of the case on 25 September 2025. Separately, in November 2024, the CMA began a cross-sector project examining how and when dynamic pricing is used; it was not an enforcement investigation and was separate from the Oasis case.

Did Ticketmaster use dynamic pricing for Oasis tickets?
The CMA said it found no evidence that Ticketmaster used an algorithm to adjust Oasis ticket prices in real time in response to demand. It described a different mechanism: lower-priced standing tickets were offered first, and higher-priced standing tickets became available after the cheaper allocation sold out.
Dynamic pricing versus tiered pricing
Dynamic pricing generally means a price is adjusted in response to changing signals, such as demand. Tiered pricing can instead involve price levels set in advance, with each level offered as the previous allocation sells out. A rising price during a sale is not, by itself, proof that an algorithm changed it in real time.

For a buyer, the practical questions are when prices were set, what caused a change, what the seller disclosed before and during the queue, and whether different ticket categories offered different locations or benefits. The CMA’s concerns in this case centered on whether people could understand the price range and ticket characteristics before making a pressured decision—not on a finding that any price increase necessarily constituted dynamic pricing.
What concerned the CMA?
Standing-ticket price tiers
The CMA said fans waiting in online queues were not clearly told that standing tickets came in two price levels or that the price could rise when the cheaper allocation sold out. Its concern was that buyers might not know the range of prices or why a higher price appeared until they were already trying to purchase.

“Platinum” seat descriptions
The CMA said some seated tickets described as “platinum” cost nearly 2.5 times as much as equivalent standard tickets, without sufficient explanation that they offered no additional benefits and were often in the same stadium area. The concern was that the label could make buyers think those seats were better than standard tickets. The near-2.5-times comparison is the CMA’s 2025 figure for certain tickets in this case; it is not a claim about every platinum ticket or every event.
What did Ticketmaster agree to change?
Ticketmaster gave the CMA voluntary undertakings, without admitting wrongdoing or liability. Under the announced measures, fans should:
- be told at least 24 hours before a sale if tiered pricing will be used and what it means;
- see the range of ticket prices when they join an online queue;
- receive regular updates, including when cheaper tickets sell out; and
- get clear information about what a ticket includes and whether one ticket is better than another.
The CMA said the measures would be implemented within six weeks at the latest. The government’s later response says Ticketmaster must report regularly to the CMA over the following two years. The CMA said ineffective implementation could lead to further enforcement action.

No. The CMA said the investigation did not result in a finding that Ticketmaster infringed consumer law. The undertakings were voluntary and made without an admission of liability. The official outcome describes commitments and monitoring, not a penalty or refunds for fans.

The CMA’s direct consumer-enforcement powers came into force in April 2025 and can include fines of up to 10% of global turnover for applicable breaches. The CMA said those powers did not apply retrospectively to the Oasis investigation, which proceeded under the previous enforcement framework. That does not mean Ticketmaster was fined or found to have breached the law in this case.
Did the government ban dynamic ticket pricing?
No new ban or legislation was announced. After a call for evidence on live-events pricing, the government said it did not intend to introduce new legislation on pricing practices in the sector because existing consumer law already requires clear and accurate price information before purchase. It said it would monitor the industry and expects ticketing businesses to act on the CMA’s findings and guidance.
The Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport reported receiving 105 stakeholder submissions in 2025. Respondents raised themes including a lack of upfront price transparency, frustration with dynamic and tiered pricing, market concentration, confusion about ticket terms and sellers, and redress when purchases go wrong. The submission count describes responses to the government process; it is not a survey measuring how common those experiences are among all ticket buyers.
What the case means for fans buying tickets
The case did not establish that every price rise during an online sale is algorithmic, unlawful, or evidence of a breach. It established a narrower point: buyers need useful information about available prices, tier changes, and ticket differences at the time that information can affect their decision. The CMA’s undertakings set out the disclosures Ticketmaster agreed to provide, while the government has said existing consumer-law requirements remain in place.
