What the Cast of ‘Shameless’ Really Thought of Emmy Rossum

There is no single cast-wide opinion of Emmy Rossum on record. Emma Kenney offered criticism alongside affection, William H. Macy backed her exit, and Rossum praised her co-stars. Here is who said what, and when.

The public record does not show a single opinion shared by the whole Shameless cast about Emmy Rossum. What exists is a set of individual, dated remarks: Emma Kenney’s criticism, which came with real affection; William H. Macy’s support when Rossum left the show; and Rossum’s own praise for Macy and the ensemble. Those accounts do not add up to a cast consensus, and several castmates have not said anything substantive about her as a colleague at all.

Why there is no cast-wide verdict

Readers searching this question usually want a verdict. The interviews support something narrower. Each statement below belongs to one speaker, was made at one point in time, and describes one aspect of the working relationship. Treating them as a group opinion would overstate what anyone said, and treating silence from some castmates as agreement with the loudest voice would do the same.

Emma Kenney (Debbie Gallagher): the clearest criticism, with affection attached

Kenney gave the most direct criticism of Rossum among the cast interviews reviewed. In a 2021 Us Weekly roundup of castmates’ comments about working with Rossum, Kenney recalled feeling anxious before some scenes with her on days when Rossum was having a bad day. She said the set became “more of a positive place” after Rossum left. She also described a “weird competition” on set, but said she did not know whether that came from Rossum or from other people there.

The same article shows the rest of her account. Kenney said she still had “a lot of love for Emmy,” that the two had not spoken in years, and that she hoped Rossum had found happiness. Read as a whole, this is one actor describing a difficult stretch of working life from her own position, not a finding about how the cast as a whole experienced Rossum. Source: Us Weekly.

William H. Macy (Frank Gallagher): support for her exit

Macy’s comments concern Rossum’s departure rather than her day-to-day conduct. In August 2018, TheWrap reported that the cast had been expecting Rossum to leave after nine seasons. Macy said she had made the right choice, wished her well, and said he looked forward to seeing what she did next. The line most often quoted from that interview is: “She’s young and I think she’s made the right choice.”

In a later recollection, reported in the same Us Weekly roundup, Macy said he cried during the table read for Rossum’s final episode and that others at the table began crying as well. That is an account of an emotional farewell, not a statement about Rossum as a colleague. Sources: TheWrap and Us Weekly.

Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher): praise for her co-stars

Rossum’s public comments are the most consistently positive in the record. In a March 12, 2014 interview with CBS News, she responded to Macy calling her “the spiritual center of the show” by saying: “He’s a wonderful actor. It’s really fun to work with him.”

In a June 20, 2013 interview with TVLine, she described Macy as “very unafraid, and that’s very inspiring as an actor,” and said that working opposite him and the rest of the cast was empowering. These are Rossum’s own descriptions of the collaboration. They do not answer Kenney’s account, and they are not a neutral measure of the set, because they come from one of the people in the relationship. Sources: CBS News and TVLine.

Castmates and crew who have not addressed Rossum directly

Two names often come up in searches on this topic, but the interviews reviewed do not support attributing a view of Rossum to either of them.

  • Jeremy Allen White and Cameron Monaghan. A 2014 TV Guide interview features Rossum, White, and Monaghan discussing the Gallagher siblings’ values and story. It is a conversation about the characters, not a substantive assessment by either actor of Rossum as a colleague. Source: TV Guide.
  • John Wells (showrunner). The Television Academy interview archive indexes a segment in which Wells discusses Macy and Rossum as Frank and Fiona, along with material on the show’s production. The listing does not include a direct quote about their working relationship off screen. Source: Television Academy Interviews.

Silence on a question is not agreement with anyone. Without direct statements from these people, the accurate answer is that their view is not on record in the material available.

Was Emmy Rossum difficult to work with?

The question circulates in online discussion, but the documented evidence is limited to the accounts above. Kenney’s description of a difficult atmosphere on some days is the only on-record criticism of Rossum’s work environment from a castmate, and it is specific to her own experience and uncertain about its source. Rossum and Macy describe the collaboration positively. Anonymous posts and rumor threads do not add reliable information, and they should not be treated as evidence of how Rossum behaved on set.

How to read these remarks

When you cite or compare these statements, keep four things attached to each one:

  • Speaker: first-person testimony from the person named, not a cast-wide finding.
  • Date and context: a 2013 or 2014 interview about the show’s early seasons is not a 2018 comment about her exit, and a 2021 roundup is a retrospective.
  • Subject: whether the remark concerns Rossum as a colleague, her departure, or the characters.
  • Form: direct quotation versus a reporter’s summary. Several items above are paraphrased by the outlet, so check the linked article before reusing any longer passage.

The record is also dated. These are statements made at specific points, and later remarks by any of these people could change the picture. The lines here describe what was said and when, not how the relationship stands today.
