Sol mistakes Mae for Osha and kills Mother Aniseya; later, Indara lies about what happened. Neither act makes the Jedi simple villains. The episode’s sharper point is that good intentions can still override truth, judgment and another person’s agency.
What happens at the end of “Choice”
Episode 7 revisits the Brendok tragedy from the perspective of the Jedi who visited the coven. It is a companion to episode 3’s account, not an omniscient correction: each version is shaped by what its characters know and how they interpret it. StarWars.com describes the two-part account as influenced by Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon.
Sol sees the coven’s training and discipline and believes the twins are being harmed. The Jedi also have reasons to be wary: Aniseya intrudes into Torbin’s mind, and the witches later control Kelnacca. But their fear does not make their interpretations reliable. In the escalating confrontation, Mae runs for help. Sol mistakes her for Osha, then reads Aniseya’s transformation into protective smoke as an attack. He ignites his lightsaber and kills her.
Sol saves Osha, who wants to leave the coven and join the Jedi, and the sisters are separated. His fatal error haunts him for the next 16 years, according to the official recap. The episode makes the consequences of his certainty concrete: in trying to protect Osha, he acts on a mistaken identification and cuts short the family’s chance to decide what should happen.

Why the two accounts of Brendok sound different
The contrast between episodes 3 and 7 is not simply a matter of one side telling the truth and the other lying. The accounts foreground different perspectives, knowledge and fears. In “Choice,” the Jedi see the coven’s actions through their own suspicions; in “Destiny,” viewers see the events from the coven’s side. The viewer has to weigh what each character perceives against what the episode shows.
Language adds to the misunderstanding. Aniseya tells the twins, “Ascension is about walking through fear. It is about sacrificing a part of yourself.” Mae later tells the Jedi, “Everyone must walk through fear. Everyone must be sacrificed to fulfill their destiny.” The official recap notes that Mae misremembers the phrase, making the ritual sound more ominous to the Jedi. A changed recollection feeds their fear, but does not erase the real danger they face or excuse Sol’s lethal mistake.

Why Sol’s choice is not purely protective
Sol’s decision is tangled up with his feelings for Osha. Showrunner Leslye Headland describes him as divided between his Jedi duty and a paternal-like attachment. In a StarWars.com discussion of the show’s Jedi, she says, “He loves Osha in a way that is almost selfish, meaning he thinks he knows what’s best for her.”
That attachment helps explain why Sol believes he should intervene, but it does not make his judgment sound. Indara’s challenge to him is that he does not get to decide what is best for Osha. The episode links his desire to save her with the harm caused when he acts as though his conviction gives him authority over her family and choices.

Why Indara lies about Brendok
Indara’s lie conceals the truth of the tragedy and shields Osha from the burden of what happened. Headland offers her own interpretation in a Jedi News interview: Indara sees a terrible tragedy and regards Sol’s insistence on turning himself in at Osha’s expense as selfish. She wants Osha to grow up and achieve what she wanted.
Headland explicitly leaves Indara’s choice open to interpretation. Her explanation is not a definitive answer that settles whether the lie is justified. It frames the tension: concealing the truth may protect Osha’s future, but it also denies her the truth about her past. Sol’s protective certainty and Indara’s protective lie both show how care can become a reason to decide what another person is allowed to know.

Does “Choice” say the Jedi are villains?
No. Headland has said she did not see the Jedi as antagonists, but as flawed people. In the StarWars.com discussion, she describes wanting to make them “a little bit more fallible.” Episode 7 supports that framing: the Jedi are neither beyond criticism nor depicted as uniformly corrupt. They face genuine threats, misread events, and make choices whose consequences fall heavily on Osha and Mae.
The title’s idea of Jedi becoming liars fits the episode when it is understood as a warning, not a verdict on the entire Order. Fear can distort what a Jedi sees; attachment can turn protection into control; loyalty or a desire to shield someone can make concealment seem necessary. “Choice” focuses on Sol’s misjudgment and Indara’s lie, leaving viewers to judge their motives and the cost of their decisions.
