For a starting shortlist, compare the Hohner New Super 64 as a chromatic candidate and Suzuki Promaster MR-350 as a diatonic candidate. Neither is an established universal winner; choose by repertoire, key, range, feel, and service needs.
Choose the harmonica type that fits your music
Chromatic harmonicas
A chromatic harmonica uses a button-operated slide to provide all tones of the chromatic scale. That broad note access can make it a logical choice for jazz, classical music, and other repertoire that calls for frequent chromatic notes. Hohner describes those uses in its chromatic harmonica guidance; genre is a useful starting point, not a rule.
Diatonic harmonicas
A diatonic harmonica is centered on a particular major scale and is made in different keys. Players select a key and use their technique to suit the song and ensemble; this key-centered layout often fits blues, rock, country, and related styles. Suzuki’s guide to harmonica types and key selection emphasizes considering the music and whether you are playing with other musicians.
Compare the leading candidates by instrument type
| Candidate | Type and source-backed details | What the evidence does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Hohner New Super 64 | Chromatic; listed in Hohner’s Performance Series. Hohner describes the series as hand assembled and intended for demanding performance. | A serious model to compare if you need chromatic access. Hohner’s claims describe its own positioning and construction; they do not establish independent superiority or a universal professional preference. |
| Suzuki Promaster MR-350 | Diatonic; Suzuki Europe’s catalog calls it a deluxe model and lists an aluminium comb, phosphor bronze reeds, and availability in major keys plus High G and Low F. | A serious model to compare if a diatonic layout fits your repertoire. The catalog description is not a controlled performance comparison. |
Hohner’s Performance Series page includes the New Super 64. Suzuki Europe’s diatonic catalog provides the Promaster details. These are different instrument types, not interchangeable alternatives in a like-for-like ranking.

Seydel Chromatic Saxony
Seydel’s 2018 dealer guide positions the Chromatic Saxony with stainless steel reeds as an option for ambitious or professional players, and compares its durability, dynamics, airtightness, and sonority with the Chromatic Deluxe. This is dated manufacturer sales material, not a recent independent test. See Seydel’s 2018 English dealer guide.
Hohner diatonic models
Hohner’s Progressive Series includes the Special 20, Golden Melody, and Rocket. Hohner positions Rocket models toward advanced players and highlights comfort and volume. These models are worth investigating when comparing diatonic handling and repertoire fit, rather than treating the family as a single objective ranking. How to choose for professional use
- Start with repertoire and technique. Decide whether the broad chromatic note access of a slide instrument or a key-centered diatonic layout better serves the material you play.
- Match key and tuning to the set. For diatonic playing, check the required key against the songs and other musicians. Suzuki’s guide includes style-oriented key suggestions; do not assume one key covers every performance need.
- Check range and layout. Hole count and note access affect what you can play and how the instrument feels in your hands. Compare the specific model configurations available; the sources do not supply a common range table for every candidate.
- Assess feel and construction in person if possible. Mouthpiece and comb feel, airtightness, materials, and serviceability matter over repeated playing. Hohner describes matched components for airtightness and tuning stability in its Performance series; Suzuki lists the Promaster’s comb and reed materials. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements.
- Verify price, stock, and support where you plan to buy. Current street prices and retailer availability are not established by the cited product materials. Confirm local terms and whether the model can be serviced before committing.
What can—and cannot—be called “best”
There is no source-backed universal professional favorite or controlled head-to-head test among these candidates. Manufacturer and distributor pages establish product positioning and listed construction, not measured superiority. Hohner’s Performance page says, “Whether you play jazz, classical music, pop, soul or blues, you’ll find your true companion in the Performance Series.” That is Hohner’s brand copy, not an independent endorsement. Treat the New Super 64 and Promaster MR-350 as informed starting points within their respective types, then choose for your own repertoire, required key or range, and playing comfort.
