CNN published surveillance footage on May 17, 2024, that it said was dated March 5, 2016. The silent clip shows Sean “Diddy” Combs pursuing and physically attacking Cassie Ventura in a hotel hallway. CNN reported that the images appeared to corroborate some physical-assault allegations in Ventura’s lawsuit, but the recording does not establish what happened before it begins or what was said.
What the video shows
CNN described the footage as a compilation from multiple camera angles with no audio. In the visible sequence, Combs, wearing a towel, runs after Ventura in a hallway, grabs her and throws her to the floor, kicks her, and briefly drags her. Later, he appears to shove her and throw an object in her direction. CNN’s transcript describes two kicks in one passage.
Because the recording is silent and begins mid-event, it cannot establish what either person said or what happened before the recorded sequence. This account describes the actions CNN reported as visible in the footage.
When and where CNN said it was filmed
CNN reported that the footage was dated March 5, 2016, and showed a hallway at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles. CNN said it verified the location by comparing the setting with publicly available interior photographs. The date was also reported in the CNN article carried by the Associated Press.

How the footage relates to Ventura’s lawsuit
Ventura filed a federal lawsuit on November 16, 2023, alleging years of abuse and describing a March 2016 incident at the hotel. CNN reported that the incident described in the complaint appeared to match the footage. The lawsuit settled the following day on confidential terms. Combs’s attorney said the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing, according to CNN. The video may be compared with the complaint’s account of the recorded incident; it does not independently establish allegations about events outside the clip.
The complaint also alleged that Combs paid the hotel $50,000 for the security footage. That payment was an allegation, not an independently established fact; the Associated Press reported that Combs and his representatives had not addressed that specific claim.

What Combs and prosecutors said after publication
Combs’s May 19 apology
On May 19, 2024, Combs posted a public video taking responsibility for his actions in the footage. The Associated Press reported his statement: “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
In a statement reported on May 17, 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office called the images “extremely disturbing and difficult to watch” and said it had not been presented with a case. The office added that if the depicted conduct occurred in 2016, it could not charge it because the time limit for prosecuting assault had passed. That was the office’s contemporaneous statement about the conduct shown in this footage; it should not be read as a general update on other allegations or later legal matters.
