Netflix describes the finale’s scene of Gein assisting agents as a delusion; the FBI’s account instead says a Pensacola police officer stopped Bundy in 1978 and that an FBI fugitive flyer helped identify him afterward.
What happens in the finale?
In the final episode of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Gein imagines himself helping FBI agents catch Bundy. Netflix’s official explainer calls the scene “a delusion that the hospital nurses take in stride.” That is Netflix’s description of the dramatic scene—not a clinical diagnosis or evidence that Gein took part in a real investigation.
The scene puts Gein into Bundy’s story as part of the series’ portrayal of Gein’s imagined experience and cultural legacy. It should not be read as a historical account of an FBI consultation.
What does the documented account say?
The FBI describes Bureau personnel—not Gein—as conducting behavioral-analysis work related to Bundy. Agents Howard Teten and Robert Ressler prepared a psychological assessment that informed the Bureau’s account of Bundy’s methods and preferences while he was a fugitive. The FBI’s public account does not describe consulting Gein. Read the FBI’s account of the development of behavioral analysis.

The capture sequence the FBI documents ends with a traffic stop in Pensacola. At about 1:30 a.m. on February 15, 1978, an officer noticed Bundy driving a stolen orange Volkswagen Beetle and stopped him. The officer initially did not know who was in the car; Bundy was identified with help from the FBI’s fugitive flyer. The FBI summarizes the arrest this way: “The officer had no idea who was inside the car, but Bundy was quickly identified with the help of the FBI’s fugitive flyer and was soon back in Colorado to face murder charges.” See the FBI’s account of Bundy’s arrest.
How the two accounts differ
| Finale | FBI’s public account |
|---|---|
| Gein imagines helping agents catch Bundy; Netflix calls this a delusion. | FBI agents Teten and Ressler prepared a behavioral assessment, and a Pensacola officer stopped Bundy. The fugitive flyer helped identify him. |
| A dramatic scene in a scripted series. | An agency history describing FBI work and the arrest sequence. |
| Not evidence of a real Gein-FBI consultation. | Does not mention Gein as a participant. |
The FBI’s public histories establish the Bureau’s account of its work and the arrest; they are not a review of every possible archival record. The defensible conclusion is that the finale’s Gein-Bundy assistance is fictionalized, and the documented capture sequence credits other people and events.

Where to read more
For Gein’s history apart from the invented Bundy scene, Harold Schechter’s Deviant: The Shocking True Story of the Original “Psycho” is an optional nonfiction starting point. Simon & Schuster lists a Gallery Books edition published April 1, 2025. The book is background on Gein; it does not substantiate the finale’s imagined scene. See the publisher’s book page.
Netflix’s official title page lists Monster: The Ed Gein Story; streaming availability may vary by region and over time.
