Sydney Sweeney said the downside of her nude scenes in Euphoria was that they seemed to overshadow her acting: she felt people did not talk about her performance because she had appeared naked. She also described the distress of unauthorized screen grabs circulating online and reaching her family. At the same time, she said she could ask for shirtless moments to be removed—and that creator Sam Levinson agreed.
What Sweeney said the professional downside was
In a January 20, 2022 interview with The Independent, Sweeney said she was proud of her work in Euphoria and considered it a strong performance, but felt the nudity had become the subject people noticed instead: “no one talks about it because I got naked.” Her point was about the recognition she felt her acting was not receiving, not proof that nudity caused a measurable effect on her career or awards prospects. No such effect is quantified in the available reporting. The Independent interview

She also described what she saw as a gendered double standard. In her view, men who show their bodies in sex scenes may still receive praise and awards, while women are judged differently. That is Sweeney’s assessment, rather than a statistical finding about award outcomes.
How online circulation affected her family
Sweeney said screen grabs taken from her nude scenes circulated on social media, and that her younger brother was tagged in posts. She called this “the most hurtful thing that anybody could do.” Her account describes a personal cost beyond the scenes themselves: images were shared beyond the context of the show and brought her family into the online attention.

Did she ask for fewer nude scenes?
She said she spoke up when she thought a shirtless moment for Cassie was unnecessary. Sweeney recalled telling Levinson, “I don’t really think that’s necessary here,” and said he responded, “OK, we don’t need it.” She added, “When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.” Her account therefore supports a specific conclusion: she requested changes to some moments, and said those requests were accepted. She did not say Levinson forced her to appear nude on Euphoria.
The same interview distinguished her Euphoria experience from an unnamed other project where she said she felt uncomfortable because the director did not communicate properly and would not change the script. That separate account should not be attributed to Euphoria. The Independent also reported that Euphoria used an intimacy coordinator. The interview and its production context

Her experience and criticism of the show are separate questions
Sweeney’s account of her own boundaries does not resolve broader criticism of how Euphoria depicts sexualized characters who are presented as teenagers. A 2025 Mediaversity review argues that camera and writing choices can make the show’s treatment of characters such as Cassie feel voyeuristic or objectifying. That is the reviewer’s interpretation of the show, not a claim Sweeney made about her experience or evidence of a production motive. Mediaversity’s review of seasons 1–2
A separate 2022 Independent feature discussed sex and nudity as part of the series’ style and appeal. That is journalistic analysis of the show, not Sweeney’s explanation for why scenes were included. The feature on Euphoria’s sex and nudity

What intimacy coordination can—and cannot—tell us here
Intimacy coordination and communication around boundaries are broader production concerns, particularly when performers are asked to film intimate scenes. Coverage of teen dramas has discussed those practices and the difficulties performers can face when trying to set limits. That context does not change the specifics of Sweeney’s account: she said she raised concerns about particular Euphoria moments and Levinson agreed to remove them.
