Studio Ghibli has confirmed that it supervised a 4K digital remaster of Princess Mononoke for theatrical release, and that the studio directly oversees restoration of original picture and sound elements for new 4K releases. The public announcements do not, however, explain how Ghibli’s archive was used, identify the specific source materials, or lay out the restoration steps. The clearest account is therefore about what the studio confirms: its role, the theatrical formats, and the Japanese home-video edition.
What is confirmed about Ghibli’s 4K process?
Studio Ghibli described the 2025 theatrical release of Princess Mononoke as a studio-supervised “4K digital remaster.” A later announcement from GKIDS and IMAX says that the original picture and sound elements for new 4K restorations are restored in 4K by Studio Ghibli, under the direct oversight of Atsushi Okui, a Ghibli digital-imaging leader. That establishes studio involvement and the stated restoration resolution; it does not identify which elements were used for this film or describe the full technical workflow.

In the December 5, 2025 announcement, GKIDS CEO Eric Beckman said: “The original picture and sound elements are being lovingly and meticulously restored in 4K by Studio Ghibli and we are beyond excited to be able to share the results with North American audiences.” The statement describes the studio’s restoration work, not the archive’s contents or handling.
What does the archive have to do with it?
An archive can preserve film materials and provide a foundation for later restoration, but preservation and restoration are not the same task. The National Film Archive of Japan describes practices that include inspecting and cataloguing films, duplicating rare or at-risk film for long-term preservation, and restoring selected films to reproduce their content faithfully. The U.S. National Archives describes digital restoration masters made from 2K or 4K DPX scans, with possible image adjustments such as color and density correction. These are general examples, not accounts of Studio Ghibli’s private archive or methods.

Ghibli’s public announcements do not say whether the Princess Mononoke remaster began with camera negative, intermediate film elements, a digital master, or a combination. They also do not document scanning equipment, restoration software, frame-by-frame repair, color decisions, or sound-restoration methods. As a result, the archive’s precise role in this restoration cannot be established from the announcements.
How did the 4K remaster reach Japanese theaters?
Ghibli’s theatrical notice says screenings began in Japan on October 24, 2025, with expanded screenings announced for November 7. The run reached 171 theaters across all 47 prefectures. The distribution file was a 4K DCP—a Digital Cinema Package used to deliver films to cinemas—but Ghibli cautioned that individual theater conditions could result in a 2K-converted presentation. A 4K file therefore does not guarantee that every audience saw the film projected at 4K.

Studio Ghibli also reported that Toho attributed 108,000 admissions to the first three days of the release across 61 theaters. That is the figure as reported by Ghibli and attributed to Toho, not an independently audited count.
What is known about the Japanese 4K disc?
Studio Ghibli announced a Japanese Princess Mononoke 4K UHD and Blu-ray set for June 24, 2026. Its notice lists the UHD video as 3840×2160p and the Blu-ray as 1920×1080p. Those specifications apply to the announced Japanese edition; they do not establish the language tracks, subtitles, region compatibility, price, or availability of editions in other markets. The announcement also lists a Japanese Kiki’s Delivery Service 4K UHD and Blu-ray release for November 25, 2026. GKIDS and IMAX have said that more Ghibli titles are planned for North American theatrical release in 2026 and beyond, but those statements alone do not establish specific dates or disc editions for every territory.

The firm takeaway is that Studio Ghibli supervises its 4K remastering work and says it restores original picture and sound elements in 4K. For Princess Mononoke, Ghibli also confirms a 4K theatrical distribution file and a Japanese UHD/Blu-ray edition with stated video resolutions. Public announcements do not show how the archive’s materials were selected or used, or provide a step-by-step account of the restoration.
