Spotify’s 2015 chart reported that G, C, D and A major together accounted for more than one-third of the songs in its catalog. That describes the songs counted, not what listeners preferred: the report did not say whether its figures were weighted by plays, and it is historical rather than a picture of Spotify today.
What the 2015 chart reported
In a May 8, 2015 article, Gizmodo’s Ria Misra described a chart assembled by Spotify’s Kenny Ning using more than 30 million songs in Spotify’s database. The article’s wording says “over the over 30 million songs.” Because the linked Spotify chart could not be retrieved, the figures here are attributed to Gizmodo’s account rather than independently verified against the original chart.

- G major, C major, D major and A major together represented more than one-third of the catalog, according to the report.
- Among minor keys, only A minor, E minor and B minor were reported to exceed 4% each.
- F-sharp minor was reported at 2.5%.
These are selected figures reproduced in the 2015 article, not a complete table of every key and not a new measurement of Spotify’s catalog. Read Gizmodo’s May 8, 2015 report.
Does the chart reveal what people like listening to?
Not by itself. A count of songs assigned to a key measures catalog prevalence. It does not establish listener taste unless songs are weighted by listening activity or paired with evidence about what people hear and prefer. The Gizmodo article does not say whether the chart used play counts, so it cannot support a ranking of listeners’ favorite keys.

Nor does the report establish how Spotify detected a track’s key, which catalog snapshot was counted, or how it treated songs with ambiguous or changing keys. Those gaps matter when interpreting exact percentages: the article offers a historical summary, not a documented method that can be replicated from the accessible account.
Why might some keys appear more often?
Misra raised two possible explanations, neither demonstrated by the chart. One is that the catalog’s musical representation—described in the article as leaning toward Western music—could shape the distribution. Another is instrument ergonomics: keys that are convenient to play may be common in music written for popular instruments.

The article attributes this observation to Kenny Ning: “E is convenient for guitar, but not piano. C is convenient for piano, but not guitar. G is convenient for both guitar and piano.” It also suggests that F-sharp minor may be less common partly because guitar playing in that key can involve more frequent or difficult barre chords, while G major is comparatively convenient on guitar and piano. These are plausible hypotheses, not controlled findings or proven causes of the reported pattern.

How to read the chart responsibly
- Call it a 2015 report about the distribution of detected keys in Spotify’s catalog—not a current Spotify ranking.
- Keep catalog counts distinct from streams, listener surveys and personal preference.
- Attribute the figures and explanations to Gizmodo’s report; the linked Spotify chart and its methodology are not available here for verification.
- Do not infer that major keys are more enjoyable or that instrument difficulty caused the distribution.
