Sioux Falls Mayor Christine Erickson said the documentary highlights the need for collaboration across government and the public and private sectors to address homelessness and the lack of affordable housing. The reporting documents her view, but does not provide individual reactions from city councilors.
What is “24 Hours on 8th Street” about?
“24 Hours on 8th Street” is a locally produced documentary about homelessness in Sioux Falls. It began with chef and businessman Rudy Navarrete asking what someone arriving in the city without resources would do. Navarrete and videographer Everett Palmer spent 24 hours on the street with volunteers, then developed the project into a year-long exploration of homelessness and local services.
The filmmakers interviewed people affected by homelessness alongside service providers, advocates, experts and community leaders. Sioux Falls Simplified described interviews with more than two dozen community leaders; the Argus Leader, in a report republished by AOL, reported more than 30 interviews. Those descriptions may count different people or categories. The Argus Leader reported a runtime of 59 minutes and credited Sean Baker and Navarrete as producers, with Palmer directing.
According to the Sioux Falls Simplified report, the filmmakers wanted the story to unfold without imposing a specific narrative and featured people who approached them first.

What does the film raise about homelessness in Sioux Falls?
Coverage of the documentary points to practical barriers people can encounter: inconsistent access to food and water, difficulty navigating services without a phone or identification, housing costs, criminal records and mental health needs. The filmmakers reported spending about an hour searching for available drinking water during their own experience. That is an anecdote from the project, not a measure of how often people in Sioux Falls go without water.
The film and related reporting also focus on how people move among service providers and whether organizations coordinate effectively. Angela Kennecke, founder of Emily’s Hope and moderator of the August 19 premiere event, called for agencies to share resources, communicate and avoid working in silos.
