But Barrow also said Combs had testified against him in the 1999 nightclub-shooting case and that the case had “destroyed my life.” Those are Barrow’s claims about their past, not findings by a court.
What Shyne said after Combs’s arrest
Speaking at a news conference in Belize in September 2024, Barrow said he did not celebrate Combs’s arrest. He described their relationship as professional and said he had nothing to do with Combs’s personal life. His grievance, he said, was rooted in the 1999 nightclub-shooting case: “This is someone who destroyed my life,” The Guardian reported him saying. The Guardian’s report places the remarks in the context of Barrow’s role as Belize’s opposition leader at the time.

Barrow’s comments followed Combs’s September 2024 federal arrest, but his criticism focused on the much older New York case. The two proceedings are separate, and their outcomes should not be conflated.
What happened in the 1999 nightclub-shooting case?
A shooting at a Manhattan nightclub in 1999 wounded three people. Barrow and Combs were among those arrested. In 2001, Barrow was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison; Combs was acquitted of charges related to the shooting. The Associated Press later reported that Barrow served nearly nine years, which is different from the sentence imposed. The AP timeline summarizes the case and its later context.

- From music mogul to controversy, Sean Combs' life is full of highs and lows, but the central mystery remains: What did Diddy do?
Barrow has said Combs testified against him, and he has described himself as the person left to bear the consequences. That is Barrow’s account of the case; the legal outcomes establish that Barrow was convicted and Combs acquitted of the related charges, but do not establish Barrow’s claim about Combs’s role or motives.
Barrow’s fall-guy allegation—and Combs’s denial
Barrow revisited the case in the trailer for the documentary The Honorable Shyne, saying, “I was absolutely set up to be the fall guy.” The Guardian reported that the documentary premiered on Hulu on November 18, 2024. That release date is historical; the cited reporting does not establish whether the film is currently available in a particular territory. The Guardian’s documentary coverage reports Barrow’s allegation.
Combs’s legal counsel denied that Combs orchestrated Barrow to take the fall, calling the allegation false. AllHipHop quoted counsel as saying Combs “categorically denies Mr. Barrow’s allegations, including any suggestion that he orchestrated Mr. Barrow to ‘take the fall’ or ‘sacrificed’ him by directing witnesses to testify against him.” The denial was reported by AllHipHop. The competing claims have not been established here as a judicial finding.

How Combs’s later federal case ended
The arrest mentioned in Barrow’s 2024 remarks concerned a separate federal case. In September 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced an indictment charging Combs with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. An indictment states charges; it is not proof of guilt. The Justice Department’s announcement records the charges at that time.

This later verdict is distinct from the 2001 outcome in the nightclub-shooting case; it does not resolve Barrow’s account of what happened between the two men in 1999.
