In a 2020 interview, she said the constant attention that followed was what scarred her. That distinction matters: her later account describes a confusing, heavily scrutinised experience, not a claim of lasting injury caused by the incident.
What happened in the Big Brother house?
During the sixth Australian season of Big Brother, housemates Michael “John” Bric and Michael “Ashley” Cox were involved in an incident with Severi in the early hours of 1 July 2006. The Guardian reported that it occurred at 4:17 a.m.; its account of the night-vision footage says Bric held Severi down while Cox pressed his genitals against her face. The Guardian’s 2020 retrospective reported these details.
The footage was not part of the scheduled television broadcast. It was captured and circulated from the show’s 24-hour online live stream, bringing the incident to wider public attention through leaked footage and subsequent reporting. ABC News’s 2026 history of Big Brother Australia also places the incident amid existing scrutiny of the show’s sexual and nudity content, including its Big Brother Uncut programming.
What happened after the footage circulated?
Bric and Cox were removed from the house by the following evening, according to The Guardian. The footage was given to Queensland police. The Guardian reported that police and Severi did not pursue charges; ABC News later described police as finding insufficient evidence for criminal charges. These are reported accounts of the police outcome, not a court finding or trial verdict.

The incident prompted a wider political and broadcast response. ABC reported that Channel 10 cancelled its Adults Only broadcast after the 2006 controversy. Then-prime minister John Howard urged the network to take the programme off air, saying: “Here’s a great opportunity for Channel 10 to do a bit of self-regulation and get this stupid program off the air.” Those reactions were part of the surrounding debate about the programme; they do not, by themselves, explain its later ratings or fate.
What did Camilla Severi say about being “scarred”?
In a 2020 interview with The Ben, Rob & Robbo Show, quoted by TV Blackbox, Severi drew a clear line between the incident and the scrutiny that followed: “But am I scarred by it, no. What I’m scarred by is the constant attention, you know.” She added that she had gone on to build a full life, including breakfast radio work, marriage, raising three children and studying, and described the incident as “such a blip on the radar.”

Severi also contrasted the brief moment with the scale of attention it received: “I was on the show for a hundred days, it was about 15 seconds of my time in the house and yet people do like to talk about it a lot.” The 100 days and 15 seconds are her approximate recollections, as quoted in TV Blackbox’s 2020 interview report, rather than independently measured durations.
She described the attention at the time as frightening and uncomfortable, recalling helicopters over the house with telephoto lenses taking photographs of her the day after the men were removed. Her account makes the distinction in the headline essential: she said the persistent public focus, not the incident itself, was what scarred her.

How did her view change between 2006 and 2020?
Severi’s immediate public response and her later reflection should be understood in their respective contexts. In a 2006 Big Brother Diary Room account reported by The Guardian, she called the incident “just in fun,” said she was not offended “as such,” but thought the men had taken it too far.
By 2020, she said the experience had been confusing because it happened on live television and had been dissected repeatedly. She reflected that, in a different setting, she might have told someone the behaviour was not cool and moved on. She also said that, where she stood then, she felt the men had not meant to harm her and that she had not meant to hurt them if she was upset the following day. Her later account adds perspective; it does not erase what she said at the time.
