At a Red Rocks concert on Oct. 28, 2024, Shawn Mendes said he was still figuring out his sexuality and did not define himself with a fixed label. He described sexuality as complex, called years of public speculation intrusive and personal, and said he wanted to speak about it only “for now.”
What Shawn Mendes said at Red Rocks
Mendes made the remarks during his For Friends and Family Tour performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. ABC News reported the comments the following day. He told the audience, “I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes.”

He then described his own experience: “The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone, and I don’t really know sometimes, and I know other times.” He added that he was trying to be brave and allow himself to feel things, before saying, “That’s all I really wanna say about that for now.” ABC News, Oct. 29, 2024
His words express uncertainty as well as moments of knowing. They do not announce a particular sexual-identity label, and the “for now” makes clear he was setting a boundary around what he wished to discuss at that moment.

Why he spoke before performing “The Mountain”
Mendes spoke before performing “The Mountain,” a song on his album Shawn. He said writing it gave him a way to address the discussion in a manner close to his heart; he also wanted to speak freely and feel closer to the audience. The song includes a lyric about people saying he likes “girls or boys,” but that line addresses the speculation rather than serving as a categorical statement about his identity. Los Angeles Times, Oct. 29, 2024
ABC News reported at the time that Shawn was scheduled for release on Nov. 15, 2024. That is a release-era detail, not a statement about the album’s current availability or editions.

How to understand the statement
- He spoke about his own process. “Figuring it out like everyone” was Mendes’s description of where he was, not a label supplied by the audience.
- He did not settle the question with the song. Lyrics about public speculation do not establish an identity beyond what he said directly.
- He asked for room to keep the subject personal. He described the speculation as intrusive and ended by saying that was all he wanted to say “for now.”
The Independent’s Oct. 30, 2024 account adds that Mendes had considered whether to speak that night and reflected on entering the music business at age 15. That context helps explain the decision to address the audience, but it does not change the meaning of his stated uncertainty.

Out’s retrospective timeline recounts earlier public remarks: in 2016, Mendes said the focus should be on his music rather than his sexuality; in 2018, he described feeling pressure to be seen with a woman to prove he was not gay. Those comments came in different circumstances and years. They should not be used to overwrite or reinterpret what he said at Red Rocks in 2024. Out’s timeline
