In July 2021, Britney Spears’ former manager Sam Lutfi reposted older voicemails that he said Spears had left on his phone. News reports quoted the recordings as including her saying, “I want out of this conservatorship,” and raising concerns about her children and custody. Those reports did not independently authenticate the recordings, so the quoted words should be understood as statements attributed to the audio—not as verified court testimony.
What Lutfi reportedly posted in July 2021
Contemporaneous reports say Lutfi shared several voicemail recordings on Instagram. iHeartRadio reported that the reposts appeared on Tuesday, July 27, while its article and PerthNow’s coverage were published July 29. The episode renewed attention to the messages; it should not be described as their first disclosure, because iHeartRadio also reported that Lutfi told Page Six he had leaked them before. iHeartRadio
PerthNow reported that Lutfi dated the first video to 2009 and said the messages had been left on his phone. According to its account, a third video concerned Spears seeking new legal representation. PerthNow
What the recordings were reported to say
PerthNow quoted a message as saying, “I want out of this conservatorship,” followed by a complaint that Spears had been “blackmailed by visitation with my babies by the conservatorship.” It also reported a later message in which she allegedly said her father had threatened to take her children away and asked for assurances about custodial time. These are quotations attributed by the news report to the recordings, not independently authenticated transcripts. PerthNow

What is—and is not—verified
The available contemporaneous coverage reports what Lutfi posted and what the audio was said to contain, but does not independently establish that the older recordings are authentic or that their dates and circumstances are as he described. The statements should therefore be attributed to Lutfi’s posts and to the reports’ descriptions of the audio.
A separate recording is sometimes confused with these voicemails: Spears’s June 23, 2021 court statement. KQED’s page, which includes an NPR transcript, says NPR verified that court-statement audio. That verification concerns a different recording; it does not authenticate the older messages Lutfi reposted. KQED / NPR

PerthNow noted skepticism about Lutfi and reported that a restraining order was issued on the day Spears’s conservatorship began. Separately, a Justia docket entry records that on February 21, 2008, a judge extended a temporary restraining order against Osama (“Sam”) Lutfi through a March 17 hearing date. That is a procedural docket entry, not a judicial finding about the authenticity or falsity of voicemails reposted in 2021. Justia docket
