She described the experience as painful and traumatic, then urged viewers to support reproductive freedom, saying, “We can’t go back.” The account is Field’s personal recollection as reported by contemporary news outlets; those reports do not independently verify its details or establish the law that applied at the time.
Content note: This account includes descriptions of sexual abuse and a traumatic medical procedure.
What Sally Field said happened when she was 17
Field’s account, as recounted in an Instagram video posted on October 6, 2024, was that she learned she was pregnant at 17 in 1964. A family doctor who was also a family friend helped her travel to Tijuana. Yahoo News, republishing PEOPLE reporting, said the doctor drove Field, her mother, and his wife there. Field recalled being left to enter a building with cash while the others waited outside. Yahoo News (PEOPLE reporting, October 7, 2024).
Field described the procedure as painful and traumatic. In the reports, she said she received no anesthetic, was given intermittent puffs of ether, and was molested by the technician. These are details attributed to Field’s recollection, not independently established findings. She also praised the doctor’s generosity and bravery. Field called the experience “beyond hideous and life-altering,” according to contemporary reports. Yahoo’s account also says she later began auditioning and was cast as Gidget; that detail, too, comes from the reported recollection rather than independent verification of the events around the procedure. Yahoo News (PEOPLE reporting, October 7, 2024); Variety republished by Yahoo News (October 7, 2024).
Why she said “We can’t go back”
Field’s video was an election-period advocacy message, not simply a retrospective account. She urged viewers to support reproductive freedom and to pay attention to the 2024 election and ballot initiatives. Her words, “We can’t go back. We have to all stand up and fight,” connected her personal story to that call. The caption was reported as: “PLEASE. WE CAN’T GO BACK!!” Yahoo News (PEOPLE reporting, October 7, 2024); Fox News (October 8, 2024).

The phrase refers to Field’s warning about reproductive freedom in the political context of the 2024 campaign. It should not be read as a jurisdiction-specific legal analysis: the contemporary reports reviewed here do not establish the exact laws in California or Tijuana in 1964, or describe current abortion law state by state.
Had Field written about the experience before?
Yes. Contemporary coverage says Field had written about the experience in her 2018 memoir, In Pieces. Her 2024 video brought the recollection into an election campaign appeal; it was not the first time she had publicly addressed it. Yahoo News (PEOPLE reporting, October 7, 2024); Fox News (October 8, 2024).

What the reports establish—and what they do not
The October 2024 reports agree that Field recounted a pregnancy at 17, an abortion trip to Tijuana in 1964, a traumatic procedure, and a later appeal to voters. Variety’s account, republished by Yahoo, also quotes her description of the experience as “hideous” and “life-altering.” These are contemporary reports of Field’s statements, not an independent investigation or a primary transcript of the full video. Variety republished by Yahoo News (October 7, 2024).
The accounts do not independently verify the personal details, establish the applicable 1964 law, or support conclusions about present-day law, medical care, or how common similar experiences were. The story is best understood as Field’s own account and as the basis for her political appeal.
