In an Instagram video during the 2024 presidential campaign, she retold the experience and connected it to her support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, urging voters to consider reproductive-freedom measures on state ballots as well as the national race.
What happened to Sally Field in 1964?
Field said she had little family support and limited money when she became pregnant at 17. A family doctor who was also a family friend drove her and members of her family to Tijuana. She recalled being given cash and left to enter a building for the procedure. These details are Field’s recollections as relayed in her 2024 video and reported at the time by The Independent and TheWrap.
Field said she received no anesthetic. A technician gave her a few puffs of ether, but she still felt pain. She recalled realizing that the technician was molesting her and trying to move her arms to push him away. After the procedure, she said, she was hurried out because abortion was illegal there.
Field described the procedure as “beyond hideous and life-altering.” She also said she continued to feel shame, which she linked to growing up in the 1950s. A few months after the abortion, she began auditioning and was cast in Gidget in 1965; that chronology does not establish that the experience caused her career breakthrough.

Why did she share the story before the 2024 election?
Field had written about the experience in her 2018 memoir, In Pieces, before recounting it in an Instagram video in October 2024. In the video and its caption, she connected her story to her support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz. Her caption asked people to pay attention to the election “up and down the ballot,” particularly state ballot initiatives that could protect reproductive freedom, as reported by Vanity Fair and The Independent.
Field compared her own trip to obtain an abortion with the travel, financial and logistical barriers she believed women faced in the contemporary period. That was her argument in an election-era appeal, not evidence that every person in every state faced the same circumstances.

How did the memoir and video differ?
| Account | Medium and timing | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| In Pieces | Memoir published in 2018 | Field’s earlier written account of the experience, as identified in reporting by Euronews and Vanity Fair. |
| Instagram video | Shared in October 2024 during the presidential campaign | A personal recollection connected to support for Harris and Walz and an appeal about reproductive-freedom ballot initiatives, as reported by The Independent and Euronews. |
The two tellings serve different purposes: the memoir is a written personal account, while the 2024 video placed Field’s recollection in an explicit election context. The available reporting does not establish a conflict between them.
