While accepting the 2024 Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. turned a moment of praise into a joke: he read aloud four unflattering lines from reviews of his earlier work. Contemporary reports did not identify which films or performances those reviews concerned.
What happened in Downey Jr.’s acceptance speech?
At the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards on January 14, 2024, Downey Jr. accepted Best Supporting Actor for playing Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. He said the Critics Choice Association had given him “beautiful feedback,” some of it “so poetic,” and then recited several harsh snippets as examples of the kind of writing he found memorable. CNN’s January 14 account says he did not name the performances behind them. CNN Newsource via KTVZ reported the speech; the Critics Choice Association’s official winners list confirms the award.

Which bad review lines did he recite?
News reports reproduced four short excerpts from the speech. Downey Jr. treated the lines as comic material, not as a list of identified reviews:
- “sloppy, messy and lazy”
- “Like Pee-wee Herman emerging from a coma”
- “A puzzling waste of talent”
- “amusing as a bed-locked fart”
CNN reported that he introduced the first as “kind of like haiku,” called the second metaphoric, said the third was “from a Brit,” and remarked that the final line “lingered.” Us Weekly’s January 15 report also covered the excerpts. Neither report establishes the critics, reviews, films, or performances behind the lines, so they should not be attributed to a particular title or writer.

Why the joke worked in the award context
The speech’s contrast was the point: Downey Jr. was receiving a major acting award for Oppenheimer, yet chose to spotlight the vivid sting of old criticism. He did not present the excerpts as reviews of Oppenheimer, nor did he tie them to one named film. The official awards record establishes the win, while the speech accounts leave the earlier work unspecified.
The CW’s announcement says Oppenheimer won eight awards at the ceremony, identifies Chelsea Handler as host, and says the show aired live on The CW. Those details place the moment within the awards broadcast; they do not identify the origins of the quotations. The CW Press release gives the event results and broadcast context.
What is known—and what remains unattributed
The available contemporaneous accounts establish that Downey Jr. read the four reported snippets during his acceptance remarks. They do not identify the specific reviews or the performances those reviews described. No official full transcript or original event video is established by these sources, so the reported excerpts should be treated as attributed quotations from news coverage rather than a complete transcript.
