Los Angeles police responded to a death investigation at the Reiners’ Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. The Los Angeles Police Department later announced Nick Reiner’s arrest and said its investigation identified him as responsible for his parents’ deaths. The family initially announced the deaths in a statement reported at the time: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.”
What the medical examiner determined
ABC7 reported that the medical examiner determined both Rob and Michele Reiner died from “multiple sharp force injuries.” This is the reported cause of death; it does not establish who caused the injuries or why.

What has Nick Reiner been charged with?
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Nick Reiner with murder on December 16, 2025, according to the Associated Press. A grand jury returned an indictment on July 20, 2026, which was unsealed on August 12. AP reported that the indictment alleges Reiner was lying in wait. That allegation is part of the prosecution’s case, not a finding by a judge or jury.

Did Nick Reiner plead guilty?
No. AP reported on September 15, 2026, that Reiner had twice pleaded not guilty. A not-guilty plea means the case remains contested; it is not a finding that the defendant is guilty or innocent.

In that report, AP said the case had not gone to trial. It also reported that the judge expected to hear arguments the following month about releasing grand-jury transcripts. That report described an anticipated hearing, not its outcome, so it does not establish whether the hearing occurred or what the judge decided.
Will prosecutors seek the death penalty?
No. In its September 15, 2026 report, AP said prosecutors had decided not to seek the death penalty. AP reported that if Reiner is convicted, the maximum sentence could be life in prison without the possibility of parole. Neither that possible sentence nor the decision about capital punishment determines the case’s outcome.

What have the family and defense said?
Jake and Romy Reiner’s statement
On December 22, 2025, a spokesperson for Jake and Romy Reiner said, as reported by ABC7: “Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. They will share information about a memorial service honoring their parents at a later date.”
Statements by Nick Reiner’s attorneys
After prosecutors announced they would not seek the death penalty, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene told AP: “Nick has a serious mental illness and a long history of struggling with self-medication. His circumstances are a tragic example of how difficult it can be for people experiencing significant mental health challenges to access and navigate the treatment and support they need.” This is defense counsel’s characterization, not a court finding or an established explanation for the deaths.

AP also quoted former attorney Alan Jackson saying: “what we’ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that pursuant to the laws of this state, pursuant to the law of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that.” That was an advocate’s statement, not an adjudication. AP reported that Jackson withdrew from the case for undisclosed reasons.

AP reported that Rob and Nick Reiner co-wrote the 2015 film Being Charlie, which was partly based on Nick’s teenage struggles with addiction and homelessness. That biographical context does not establish a motive, explain the deaths, or prove or disprove the murder allegations. The criminal case must be decided on evidence presented in court.

What remains undecided?
- Whether the prosecution can prove its allegations at trial.
- Whether a trial will result in a conviction or acquittal; the cited AP report said the case had not gone to trial.
- Whether the court held the anticipated arguments over public release of grand-jury transcripts, and what it decided. The September 15 AP report did not give an outcome.
Police statements, prosecutors’ allegations, the medical examiner’s cause-of-death determination, and the defendant’s plea answer different questions. None substitutes for a verdict on criminal responsibility.
