Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore a gold band set with gemstones in the Prince and Princess of Wales’s video congratulating Team GB after the Paris 2024 Olympics. It was not her familiar sapphire engagement ring. The band’s identity—and whether it was a gift from Prince William—has never been confirmed publicly.
What happened in the Team GB video?
The couple’s message followed the Paris 2024 Olympics closing ceremony and was reported on August 12, 2024. Catherine said, “From all of us watching at home, congratulations to Team GB.” William added, “Well done on all you’ve achieved,” and called the athletes “an inspiration to us all.” The brief video drew attention to Catherine’s ring because she wore a subtle gemstone-lined gold band rather than the sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring often seen on her hand. Vogue covered the video and ring discussion; Tatler reported the couple’s message.
Was it a ring from Prince William?
That is one reported interpretation, not a confirmed identification. Vogue said many observers believed the band was a ring William gave Catherine while they were students at the University of St Andrews. The university-era ring was described as a rose-gold band with pearls and garnets, which are the couple’s birthstones; Catherine was reportedly seen wearing it on her middle finger before their engagement.
Another account suggested the video band might instead be a newer eternity ring, described as gold set with diamonds and sapphires. Tatler’s later coverage said the band first appeared in the Team GB video and appeared to be gold with diamonds and sapphires. The descriptions do not establish whether observers were identifying the same piece or different rings. Vogue reported that Kensington Palace did not confirm the ring’s origin when asked by The Telegraph; no public confirmation settles the competing accounts.

How is it different from Catherine’s engagement ring?
The band in the video should not be confused with Catherine’s engagement ring, a distinct and identifiable piece. The engagement ring has an oval-cut sapphire surrounded by 14 round diamonds and formerly belonged to Princess Diana; William used it when he proposed in 2010. Tatler describes the sapphire as 12 carats. That figure refers to the engagement ring, not the disputed gold band. Tatler gives the engagement ring’s history, and Harper’s Bazaar describes its sapphire-and-diamond design.
