What Resolution Should You Use for a 24/7 Waterfall Stream on YouTube?

For a continuous YouTube waterfall stream, test 1080p30 first and step down to 720p30 if delivery is unstable. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee.

Start with 1080p at 30 frames per second (1080p30) if your source can produce it and your sustained upload can reliably carry YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate of 14 Mbps. If that mode is unstable, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps H.264. These are starting targets, not guarantees: the right setting depends on your source, encoder, connection, and the image detail you need.

Why 1080p30 is a sensible starting point

Waterfalls combine continuous motion with fine texture, so a stream needs enough detail without overwhelming the encoder or connection. YouTube does not publish a waterfall-specific resolution rule or a test comparing waterfall footage at different settings. Treat 1080p30 as a practical starting point based on YouTube’s general live-encoder recommendations, then judge the result using your own footage.

The resolution discussed here is the incoming stream sent by your encoder to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and networks. That means you choose the quality of the feed you send; YouTube creates viewer output options from it. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection.

Compare resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrates, not measured requirements for a particular waterfall setup. Choose the row that matches both your resolution and frame rate, and confirm that your encoder supports the selected codec.

Incoming mode AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
4K/2160p30 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
4K/2160p60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

For a stationary nature scene, 30 fps is a reasonable place to begin; move to 60 fps only if the source, encoder, and connection can sustain it and you can see a benefit in the motion. Higher resolution and frame rate increase the bitrate target. Do not treat a speed-test result as proof that an unattended stream will remain stable, and do not rely on a fixed upload-speed multiplier: YouTube’s guidance is to test and choose a mode your connection can reliably carry.

Choose a mode for your actual source and connection

Use 1080p30 when it holds steady

Try 1080p30 first when the camera or prepared video is available in that format. At H.264, use YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps video bitrate as a starting setting. Check that the image preserves useful water and landscape detail without visible blockiness, smearing, or repeated drops in stream health.

Step down to 720p30 if needed

If 1080p30 produces unstable delivery, reduce the incoming mode to 720p30 and use the recommended 8 Mbps H.264 target. A consistently delivered lower-resolution stream is preferable to selecting a higher mode that the real setup cannot sustain.

Consider higher modes only when they earn their cost

1440p or 4K can preserve more source detail, but their recommended bitrates are substantially higher. Use them only when the original footage contains detail viewers can benefit from and the complete signal path can maintain the target reliably. If low latency matters, note that YouTube says 4K/2160 cannot use its improve-for-low-latency option and is set to normal latency.

Set the encoder for reliable YouTube ingest

YouTube’s current guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted option YouTube recommends. For SDR it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit; for HDR it recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Use settings compatible with your encoder and the type of source you are sending.

  • Resolution and frame rate: match the source and the chosen YouTube bitrate row.
  • Video bitrate: use the relevant recommended target as a starting point, then test actual delivery.
  • Rate control: select CBR.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest: choose RTMPS where supported.
  • Color format: for SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit as listed in YouTube’s guidance. For HDR, follow its H.265 recommendation.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Match a representative scene. Use the same source, resolution, frame rate, audio, and encoder settings intended for the continuous stream. Include motion similar to the real broadcast.
  2. Run a test stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement comparable to the planned live stream. Watch the waterfall and surrounding fine detail for compression artifacts, and observe whether delivery remains steady.
  3. Check stream health and messages. YouTube’s live-stream health information can identify configuration problems such as low bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, or video ingestion starvation. Use the message to guide a correction rather than assuming resolution alone is at fault.
  4. Adjust one setting at a time. If 1080p30 does not remain stable, try 720p30 at its recommended H.264 target and retest under the same conditions.

A healthy test is useful evidence about the tested setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also reports stream status and health information, but health reporting does not itself prevent an interruption.

Troubleshoot common quality and stability problems

  • Low-bitrate warning or visible blockiness: Confirm the selected mode’s recommended bitrate and that the encoder is actually sending it. If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce resolution or frame rate and retest.
  • Frame-rate mismatch: Make the encoder output match the configured stream mode and source. A mismatch can be reported in stream-health information.
  • Video ingestion starvation: Check source capture, encoder load, and network delivery; the health message indicates video is not arriving consistently. Retest after addressing the part of the chain that is failing.
  • No audio when audio is expected: Check the encoder’s audio input and output configuration. YouTube’s health messages can flag missing audio.
  • Image looks soft despite stable delivery: Inspect the original source and its effective detail. An encoder cannot restore detail absent from the source; compare a representative test at the next suitable mode rather than assuming higher resolution will improve it.
