Rafe Judkins’s “bonkers” tease referred to a violent White Tower confrontation that opens The Wheel of Time Season 3, Episode 1, “To Race the Shadow.” He made the remark before the season premiered, after watching the episode’s first 15 minutes—not in response to viewers’ reactions.
What is the “bonkers” opening scene?
Spoilers for the opening of Season 3, Episode 1.
The sequence begins with Liandrin summoned before Siuan in the White Tower. Siuan accuses her of being Black Ajah; Liandrin fires back, accusing Siuan of concealing the Dragon’s identity and allowing him to escape Cairhien. The confrontation then exposes other Black Ajah and erupts into violence inside the Tower.
The scene is the opening Judkins was describing when he spoke at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience in May 2024. “The first 15 minutes of Season 3 is one of the most bonkers set pieces I’ve ever seen on television,” the showrunner said, according to Bleeding Cool’s report. He also praised the team’s work as “absolutely bananas,” describing “a bunch of women in their 40s and 50s shredding each other.”
Why the scene feels like a major escalation
The opening turns a dispute over loyalty and the Dragon’s identity into a fight within the White Tower itself. Its force comes from bringing the conflict into the Aes Sedai’s central stronghold and making the confrontation physical, rather than limiting it to accusations and political maneuvering.

The preview breakdown published by WotSeries describes the sequence’s progression from Siuan and Liandrin’s confrontation to the discovery of other Black Ajah and the ensuing battle. That escalation is what Judkins’s description of a large, startling set piece anticipated.
How the cast filmed the White Tower battle
Sophie Okonedo, who plays Siuan, said the battle took two weeks to shoot. In a March 2025 interview with Reactor, she recalled reading the script and thinking, “Oh shit! How are we going to film all this, this is intense!” She also described a close-knit cast between takes: “In between takes, we all spent a lot of time talking, telling stories, hanging out, and gearing up to do the next round of battle.”

That two-week figure is Okonedo’s account of filming this sequence, not a general measure of how long action scenes in the series take to produce.
How the opening relates to Robert Jordan’s novels
The Wheel of Time adapts Robert Jordan’s fantasy novels, but the reporting available on this opening does not identify a specific passage as its direct source or establish a scene-for-scene counterpart in the books. The safest distinction is that the television series draws on Jordan’s work, while this particular sequence should be understood as the show’s opening unless a specific book connection is documented.
