He also argued that a private area should come with an expectation of privacy. His comments came in a BBC interview reported on January 22, 2013, months after the photos surfaced.
What did Prince Harry say about the photos?
In a BBC interview at his military base in Afghanistan, Harry called the incident a lapse in judgment: “It was probably a classic example of me probably being too much army, and not enough prince. It’s a simple case of that.” He also said: “I probably let myself down, let my family down and let other people down but at the end of the day I was in a private area and there should be a certain amount of privacy that one should expect.” The Los Angeles Times reported the remarks on January 22, 2013.
His response combined personal regret with a defense of privacy. The comments were Harry’s own; the palace’s earlier response addressed newspapers and publication of the images.
How the photos became a royal privacy dispute
On August 22, 2012, TMZ published photographs taken in Las Vegas. Clarence House confirmed that the images were genuine but declined further comment. The Guardian reported that royal aides urged British outlets not to republish images likely taken without Harry’s consent. The Guardian’s initial report covered the publication and confirmation.

Contemporary reporting described the setting as a private VIP hotel suite after a game of strip pool; CBS News reported that account at the time. The relevant public issue was how the images had been obtained and whether they should be published, not the images themselves.
What Clarence House asked newspapers to do
On August 23, a Clarence House spokesman said the office had contacted the Press Complaints Commission (PCC), drawing attention to its code’s privacy provisions and the reasonable expectation of privacy in a hotel room. The spokesman said newspapers were also reminded of their own editorial codes, while explicitly denying that Clarence House or the Prince of Wales had threatened legal action. The Guardian reported the palace’s response and the spokesman’s explanation.

How to distinguish the two responses
- Harry, January 2013: spoke personally about his lapse in judgment, the possibility that he had disappointed others, and privacy in a private area.
- Clarence House, August 2012: addressed media publication, contacted the PCC, and reminded newspapers of their editorial codes; it denied threatening legal action.
Harry’s later interviews provide broader context about how he has discussed the press and family disclosures, but they were not follow-up statements about the Las Vegas photographs. In January 2023, he said he had withheld some family details from his memoir for fear his father and brother might never forgive him if they were published (The Guardian). In a June 2023 interview, he described speaking directly to the press rather than relying on unnamed sources (CBS News transcript); neither account revisited the 2012 photos.
