But the original creepypasta never gives the entity a clear rulebook: it implies control over the game and Tom’s experience without defining how that control works or where it ends. Sonic.EXE is a fictional horror character, not a real computer virus, haunted game, or Sega character.
What Sonic.EXE does in the original story
The creepypasta centers on Tom, who receives a computer CD labeled “SONIC.EXE.” The disc initially appears to contain a version of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, but its images, sounds, and interactions become increasingly uncanny. The story presents the entity through what happens in and around this game rather than through a systematic list of powers.
It alters the game’s presentation
Tom encounters changed imagery and a disturbing character-selection sequence. These events suggest that the entity can manipulate the game’s presentation, but the story does not explain the technical or supernatural mechanism behind the changes. The real Sonic the Hedgehog is only the familiar source material the fictional horror premise transforms; it is not the “SONIC.EXE” disc.
It defeats or torments the playable characters
The narrative depicts the entity defeating or tormenting the Sonic characters available to play. This establishes a capacity to dominate the game’s encounters, not a universal combat ranking or a complete catalogue of abilities.

It communicates with Tom and enters his nightmare
The entity addresses Tom and appears in his nightmare. The story therefore pushes its threat beyond the screen in Tom’s experience. It closes on a disturbing image associated with waking life, further blurring the boundary between the game and the player’s world within the fiction.
What the story leaves unexplained
The original narrative implies that Sonic.EXE can control or influence the game and affect Tom’s experience, but it does not establish consistent rules, boundaries, or limits. It does not explain whether the dream and waking-world events are literal supernatural effects, how the entity reaches Tom, or whether it can affect anyone else in the same way. Treat these as unresolved elements of a horror story, not as evidence of a real threat or a dependable power scale.

Original story, fan lore, and Sega canon
Sonic.EXE began as a fan-created creepypasta based on the Sonic franchise. A fan information page and the Sonic.EXE Wiki attribute its initial posting to JC-the-Hyena on August 9, 2011; the wiki separately lists January 28, 2012 as the story’s completion date. These are dates reported by fan-maintained sources, and posting and completion are distinct milestones. The fan information page also dates MY5TCrimson’s first game adaptation to August 13, 2012, a secondary-source claim that has not been independently verified here. Community lore for the original-continuity character adds an extra-dimensional entity, a game-like portal, and an ambition to cross into the human world. Those details belong to a fan-maintained continuity account; they are not all established by the original story. The wiki also distinguishes the original story from later fan-created versions and says the original is no longer part of its official Sonic.EXE project canon following an ownership transfer. “Official” in that context refers to the fan project’s internal continuity, not official Sega canon. The available sources do not include an official Sega statement establishing a formal canon position. The careful distinction is that Sonic.EXE is a fan-created creepypasta based on Sonic, while its expanded origins and powers belong to particular fan continuities. Different adaptations should not be assumed to share one origin, ability set, or canon status.
Is Sonic.EXE real?
No. Sonic.EXE and the cursed CD are fictional story elements. The fan information page describes the game in the story as fictitious. The tale uses the recognizable form of a Sonic game to create horror; it is not a report of a real haunted game or an actual computer virus. Sonic.EXE fan information page

How to compare Sonic.EXE versions
When discussing a particular adaptation or fan continuity, keep the version explicit. These questions help separate what the original story shows from what later works add:
- Which work? Identify the story, game adaptation, or continuity being discussed.
- What is actually shown? Separate depicted events from powers inferred or added in later lore.
- Who is affected? Note whether the entity acts within the game, reaches the player in the story, or both.
- How does the work define its continuity? Do not treat a fan project’s internal canon label as Sega canon.
Why the premise works as creepypasta
The story makes a familiar game feel unsafe by changing the relationship between player and screen. Uncanny images and interactions first suggest that the game itself is wrong; the nightmare and final waking-world image then extend that uncertainty into Tom’s experience. The menace comes partly from what the narrative leaves unresolved: readers see an apparent reach beyond the game, but are not given a stable explanation or limits for it.
