What “more open” meant in the PEOPLE report
Simon Perry’s PEOPLE report, published January 22, 2025, said a source close to the royal household described the Prince and Princess of Wales as “more open” and said they “talk about their relationship together.” The report later calls the person a “close royal insider,” but does not identify them, state their role or explain the basis of their account. The characterization should therefore be understood as anonymous-source reporting, not as an independently verified account of the couple’s private conversations. Read the PEOPLE story as syndicated by AOL.
Why the report connected the comment to 2024
The story placed the source’s characterization against a difficult year for the family. Catherine was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and underwent treatment. In a PEOPLE account of his remarks, William described the preceding 12 months as “probably the hardest year in my life” and said, “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.” He was speaking about a period in which both his wife and father, King Charles, faced cancer. PEOPLE’s account of William’s remarks.
PEOPLE also pointed to public expressions of affection. In a June 2024 birthday message to William, Catherine addressed him personally; in a video released in September, she announced that she had completed chemotherapy. On January 9, 2025, William marked Catherine’s birthday with a message that included: “To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you… We love you.” These public moments show what the couple chose to share publicly; they do not establish how they communicate privately or prove that illness changed their relationship.

How commentators interpreted their public affection
PEOPLE quoted royal biographer Ingrid Seward and royal historian and writer Dr. Amanda Foreman offering interpretations of the couple’s public expressions. Seward said William “must feel so fortunate that Kate has come through this” and described their shared experience as showing “the intimacy of them sharing that journey together.” She also said, “They are able to express themselves in a way they would never have done before.” Foreman said, “They feel they are very lucky to be married to each other. Their marriage is strong, and they are being honest about it.” Both commentators’ remarks appear in the PEOPLE report.
Those are the named commentators’ assessments of the couple’s public affection and marriage—not direct testimony about private conversations. They offer context for the story’s framing, but do not independently corroborate the anonymous source.

What the January 2025 story can—and cannot—establish
- It reports: An unnamed source close to the royal household told PEOPLE that William and Catherine were “more open” and talked about their relationship together.
- It does not establish: Who the source was, what access they had, whether the couple themselves would describe a change in their private communication, or whether their marriage changed because of Catherine’s illness.
- Its medical context is dated: The report says Catherine announced on January 14, 2025 that she was in remission. That is an account of her announcement at that time, not an update on her health today.
- Its timeframe matters: Published in January 2025, the story cannot establish the couple’s current private relationship or health circumstances as of October 2026.
