Paramount’s official viewing guide sets this story order and places Knuckles between the second and third films. It does not cover every Sonic cartoon, so the rest of this guide explains where those fit and how to choose a path.

Why Knuckles goes in the middle
A common mistake is to treat Knuckles as an extra to watch after the films. Paramount’s guide says the series takes place between the second and third films, so skipping it or watching it last leaves a gap before Sonic 3. The series is only six episodes, so it is the smallest commitment in the sequence.
The series was announced well before it aired. In February 2022, SEGA Corporation CEO Haruki Satomi said in the company’s announcement: “We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed.”

Where the cartoons fit
“Sonic order” can also mean the wider franchise. SEGA describes Sonic as spanning games, film, animation, music, and merchandising. The live-action order above does not describe the animated productions, and the official sources reviewed for this guide do not give a complete cross-series chronology. Treat each animated show as its own starting point and follow its own episode guide.
Sonic Prime
SEGA’s announcement identifies Sonic Prime as a Netflix animated series co-produced with WildBrain. It is not part of the Paramount film continuity, so it does not slot into the sequence above.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
Paramount’s catalog lists this as a separate animated series. Watch it on its own terms rather than between the films.
The 1990s Sonic series
Paramount’s catalog also lists a 1990s animated series. Like the other cartoons, it is a standalone starting point and not a chapter of the live-action films.
Choosing a viewing path
- Movies only: watch the three films in order. You will miss Knuckles, which the story references between films two and three.
- Movies plus Knuckles: watch the four-title order in the table. This is the complete live-action story as Paramount presents it.
- Animated shows: pick one series and follow its episode guide. Do not assume it connects to the films.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4
SEGA’s January 22, 2025 announcement gives the planned theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 as March 19, 2027, from Paramount Pictures. In the company’s words: “The fourth installment of the film franchise is set to release in theaters on March 19, 2027 from Paramount Pictures.” That is an announced schedule, not a released film, and it can change. The same announcement reported $425 million worldwide box office for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as of that date. That figure describes the franchise’s performance and says nothing about which order viewers prefer.

Streaming availability depends on region and changes over time. Check Paramount+ for the Knuckles series page and the films before you start, since the catalog in your country may differ from the sources cited here. If you want to own the films, a physical Blu-ray or DVD set can cover the movie sequence. Before buying, confirm that the listing includes the films you need and is sold in your market.
