Olivia Nuzzi has described a personal relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a reciprocated, digital-only love affair; Kennedy has denied that it happened. The account is discussed in Nuzzi’s 2025 book American Canto, but the competing claims remain just that: Nuzzi’s account and Kennedy’s denial. New York magazine separately said Nuzzi had acknowledged a relationship with a former reporting subject and violated its disclosure rules.
What Nuzzi and Kennedy have said
Nuzzi said the relationship was never physical and that she did not directly report on Kennedy or use him as a source during the period in question. In her statement reported by the Associated Press, she said: “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict.” She also said, “During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source.” Those are Nuzzi’s statements, not independent confirmation of the relationship’s details. The Associated Press reported her statement and the magazine’s response.
Kennedy’s representative disputed Nuzzi’s account. Quoted by The Washington Post, the representative said: “Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.” That statement is a denial, not confirmation of a relationship. The Washington Post’s September 2024 report also described the backlash and the magazine’s response.
Why the relationship became a journalism ethics issue
New York magazine said Nuzzi acknowledged a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign. The magazine said its conflict-of-interest and disclosure standards were violated and that, had it known, Nuzzi would not have been allowed to cover the campaign. Its statement said, “We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.” The publication’s concern was the undisclosed personal connection and the appearance of a conflict, regardless of whether particular stories were shown to be inaccurate.

As reported by the Associated Press and The Washington Post, the magazine’s editor said the relationship began after Nuzzi’s November 2023 profile of Kennedy and ended in August 2024. The magazine initially reported that its review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in her work. After a third-party review reached the same conclusion, Nuzzi and the magazine agreed to part ways. Vanity Fair reported on her departure and the review in October 2024. Vanity Fair’s account describes the exit and the magazine’s position.
What American Canto says about the affair
Nuzzi’s book, American Canto, was published by Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster on December 2, 2025. The publisher lists it as a 320-page hardcover and presents it as a broader firsthand account of the Trump era and Nuzzi’s personal history, rather than a book focused only on Kennedy. Simon & Schuster’s official page lists the book and its publication details.

In its December 2025 review, The Atlantic says Nuzzi refers to Kennedy as “the Politician” and frames the relationship as a reciprocated love affair. The review also notes that Nuzzi has described it as digital-only and that Kennedy denies it happened. That is the reviewer’s description of the book and the public accounts—not an independent finding that the relationship occurred. Read The Atlantic’s review of American Canto.

- Nuzzi acknowledged a personal relationship with a former reporting subject and said it was never physical.
- Kennedy’s representative said he had met Nuzzi only once, for an interview, and denied the relationship.
- New York magazine said the relationship violated its disclosure standards; its reviews found no inaccuracy or evidence of bias in her published work.
- Nuzzi and the magazine parted ways after a third-party review.
- Claims made later by Nuzzi’s former fiancé Ryan Lizza in coverage of American Canto are allegations attributed to him, not independently established facts.
The available accounts therefore do not settle whether the relationship happened as Nuzzi described it. They do establish that Nuzzi acknowledged a personal connection, Kennedy’s representative denied it, and her former employer treated the undisclosed connection as a breach of its newsroom standards.
