The Dumpster Battle is a story-continuing movie, not a recap. New viewers should watch all four TV seasons first, ending with Haikyu!! To the Top: the film picks up after Karasuno’s second-round win at Spring High and centers on its long-awaited official match against Nekoma.
What should I watch before the new Haikyu!! movie?
Watch the four TV seasons in order, finishing with Haikyu!! To the Top. Season four is the direct lead-in: Karasuno has reached the Spring High third round after defeating Inarizaki. The movie then moves into the match against Nekoma. Earlier seasons establish the players, teams and rivalry that give that game its weight.
You do not need to watch the older recap movies as a prerequisite. They recap earlier story material; The Dumpster Battle advances the story beyond the TV seasons.
Is The Dumpster Battle a recap or a sequel?
It is a feature-film continuation of the anime story, not a season-five label or a recap film. Its central event is Karasuno High versus Nekoma High in the Spring High third round.

Why this match matters
The schools’ rivalry is nicknamed the “Battle at the Garbage Dump,” a reference to their names and history. Their styles contrast: Karasuno is known for its attacking play, while Nekoma focuses on keeping the ball in play and linking defense. They had met repeatedly in practice, but had never faced each other in an official match before this tournament meeting. The film turns that long-awaited matchup into the main event.
Who made the film?
Susumu Mitsunaka directed and wrote the movie, Production I.G animated it, and SPYAIR performed the song “Orange.” The Japan Film Database lists its runtime as 85 minutes and its Japan opening date as February 16, 2024. Japan Film Database film record.
