In August 2025, she said Blackstock was ill and that she needed to be present for their children. That statement explained why she postponed Las Vegas shows; it was not a public statement about his death.
What Clarkson said during the divorce
Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020, citing irreconcilable differences, and the divorce was finalized in 2022, according to the Associated Press. The couple had married in October 2013 and had two children together.
She called the split difficult and public
In 2022, speaking to Brooke Reese on The Global Chart Show, Clarkson called the divorce “the hardest thing to navigate.” As reported by The Independent, she explained that writing honestly about it was complicated because the split was public and other people were involved.
She described co-parenting as tough
In comments on her talk show during the divorce proceedings, Clarkson said co-parenting was tough. She said she and Blackstock agreed on the main things, but that being in different places and not being together all the time made it difficult for her. Those remarks reflect what she said at the time; they do not establish the family’s later arrangements.

In 2023, she explained why the decision took time
On the Angie Martinez IRL Podcast in March 2023, Clarkson pushed back on the idea that the public knew the whole story simply because the divorce was visible. She said she had tried for years to make the relationship work and described the decision as deliberate: “The hardest part of that is like it wasn’t an overnight decision.” Good Morning America reported that she also said Glennon Doyle’s memoir Untamed helped shift her perspective as she considered what she wanted for her daughter.
She discussed her own needs and the effect on her children
In a June 2023 appearance on Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast, Clarkson spoke about how her ego and her wish not to have her children experience divorce affected her decision to stay. The Independent reported her saying, “Sometimes to be selfish, for me, was very important,” as she described how difficult it was to consider her own needs. Clarkson also said the song “Lighthouse” drew on her feeling that she had chosen to dim her light during the marriage. She presented this as her own experience, not a general rule about marriage.

How she connected the relationship to Chemistry
In a June 2023 Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, reported by the Los Angeles Times, Clarkson said she had not handled the divorce gracefully behind closed doors: “I’m not going to say I did it gracefully behind closed doors … just to be brutally honest I did not handle it well.” She said therapy and crying with friends had helped her, and that she had become more selective about whom she trusted with her story. “Not everyone is deserving of your story or worth it or worth your time,” she said.
Clarkson described Chemistry as drawing on the arc of a whole relationship rather than reducing it to a single event. “A whole relationship shouldn’t be just brought down to one thing,” she said. The album was her way of expressing a broader emotional history, not a claim that one song or one moment explained the marriage.

What she said about Blackstock’s illness in August 2025
On August 6, 2025, Clarkson announced that she was postponing the remainder of her Las Vegas Studio Session dates. In a statement reproduced by the Associated Press, she wrote: “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.” She identified caring for their children as the reason she needed to step away from the shows.
What is—and is not—known about a statement on his death
The Associated Press reported that Blackstock died of cancer on August 7, 2025, aged 48. A family representative told the AP that he had “bravely battled cancer for more than three years.” That quotation is from the representative, not Clarkson.

ABC News reported that Clarkson returned to her show on September 29, 2025, and did not address Blackstock’s death on that broadcast. The sources cited here do not establish a direct public statement from Clarkson specifically reacting to his death. Her August postponement announcement was about his illness and her need to be present for their children; it should not be recast as a eulogy.

The AP reported that in 2024 the parties settled lawsuits concerning millions of dollars Blackstock allegedly overcharged while serving as Clarkson’s manager. The reported overcharges were allegations; the settlement does not, on the information reported here, establish them as facts. This management dispute is distinct from Clarkson’s public comments about the marriage.
