The threatened NBC blackout on YouTube TV was resolved. The deadline in the original warning was Tuesday, September 30, 2025—not Tuesday, August 11, 2026. YouTube TV first secured a short-term extension, then Google and NBCUniversal announced a long-term agreement on October 2, 2025. On July 27, 2026, the companies announced another multi-year extension of their relationship.
That means there is no current NBCUniversal removal scheduled for August 11, 2026 in the official updates cited here. The 2025 dispute was nevertheless serious: it could have affected local NBC and Telemundo stations, major sports, news channels, entertainment networks, and some of the most recognizable NBC programs.
The short answer: the blackout threat was resolved
The original headline referred to the expiration of a YouTube TV–NBCUniversal carriage agreement on September 30, 2025. A carriage agreement is the commercial arrangement that allows a live-TV service to distribute a network. If the parties had not reached an agreement, affected networks could have disappeared from YouTube TV.
That did not turn into a prolonged blackout. YouTube TV announced a short-term extension late on September 30, and YouTube later confirmed an agreement had been reached. On October 2, NBCUniversal and Google announced a long-term deal preserving the NBCUniversal portfolio on YouTube TV.

More recently, NBCUniversal and YouTube announced another multi-year strategic partnership on July 27, 2026. That announcement specifically extended NBCUniversal’s distribution relationship with YouTube TV. Therefore, articles that describe NBC content as being scheduled for removal on August 11, 2026 are carrying forward an outdated 2025 warning unless they cite a new official notice.
What caused the 2025 dispute?
YouTube TV and NBCUniversal were negotiating over the terms and price of network carriage. Both companies presented the disagreement as a question of fairness, but their accounts were sharply different.
In its September 25, 2025 update, YouTube said NBCUniversal was seeking terms that would cost YouTube TV more than consumers paid for comparable content on Peacock. YouTube argued that accepting those terms could result in higher prices or less flexibility for subscribers. It also said it would offer a $10 credit if the content remained unavailable for an extended period.
NBCUniversal responded that YouTube TV had refused what it described as the best rates and terms in the market, demanded preferential treatment, and sought an unfair advantage over competing distributors. NBCUniversal warned that subscribers could lose premium sports, entertainment, and news programming.
Those were the companies’ negotiating positions. They should not be presented as independently established findings. The practical issue for subscribers was simpler: if the contract expired without a replacement, some NBCUniversal networks could have been removed from YouTube TV.
Which channels were at risk?
Contemporaneous coverage specifically highlighted NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network. NBCUniversal’s subsequent announcement of the final agreement identified a broader 11-network portfolio covered by the renewed deal:
| Category | Networks identified in the renewed portfolio | Subscriber relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast | NBC; Telemundo | Could affect local NBC or Telemundo station feeds, depending on the subscriber’s market. |
| News and business | CNBC; MSNBC, now branded MS NOW | Could affect live news, business coverage, analysis, and related programming. |
| Entertainment | Bravo; E!; Oxygen True Crime; USA; Syfy | Could affect reality, scripted, lifestyle, true-crime, and general entertainment programming. |
| Sports | Golf Channel | Could affect live golf coverage and other Golf Channel programming. |
| Spanish-language | Telemundo; Universo | Could affect Spanish-language entertainment, news, sports, and local programming, subject to market and rights. |
NBCUniversal’s October 2 announcement supplied the complete list. That later list should not be treated as proof that every network on it was independently confirmed to disappear at the precise September 30 deadline. The safest description is that NBCUniversal’s broader YouTube TV portfolio was at risk, with NBC and Telemundo and major cable networks such as Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA receiving the most prominent attention in the warning campaign.
There is another important distinction: the revived NBC Sports Network was part of the value added through the final agreement. It was not automatically one of the networks threatened with removal on September 30. The settlement provided for the return of NBC Sports Network, initially launching on YouTube TV.

Programs and events viewers could have lost
NBCUniversal warned that a failed agreement could have interrupted access to high-profile sports, news, and entertainment. Examples cited in contemporaneous coverage included:
- Sunday Night Football
- NBA games
- Big Ten football
- WWE programming
- Premier League soccer
- Golf coverage
- Saturday Night Live
- The Voice
- The Real Housewives franchise
Axios reported NBCUniversal’s list of potential programming losses, and Forbes described the possible effect on NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, USA, and related programming.
This was an illustrative list, not a complete show-by-show blackout schedule. The impact of a network dispute depends on where a program airs, whether it is a live broadcast or an on-demand title, whether local or national rights apply, and whether the program is separately available through Peacock or another authorized service.
What would have happened to local NBC stations?
A YouTube TV blackout would not have affected every subscriber in exactly the same way. Local channel availability is based on the subscriber’s home area and ZIP code. YouTube TV’s official help information instructs users to check their ZIP code for the applicable local lineup.

In practical terms:
- A subscriber in a market where YouTube TV carried a local NBC affiliate could have lost that NBC feed.
- A subscriber in a market where YouTube TV carried a local Telemundo affiliate could likewise have lost that feed.
- Not every subscriber receives the same local station, and the dispute should not be described as though every NBC-owned station and every affiliate would necessarily disappear identically nationwide.
- The loss of a local station would be different from losing a national cable network such as Bravo, CNBC, USA, or Golf Channel.
Local rights also matter for sports. A nationally advertised event may have different availability depending on the network, local affiliate, regional restrictions, and streaming rights attached to that event.
What about sports, news, and entertainment?
Sports
Live sports would have been among the most noticeable potential losses because viewers cannot simply watch a missed live event later in the same way they might watch a rerun. The threatened properties included Sunday Night Football, NBA games, Big Ten football, WWE, Premier League soccer, and golf.
A network blackout would not necessarily have made every related event unavailable everywhere. Some NBCUniversal sports properties are also offered through Peacock, while rights differ by sport, event, season, market, and year. Peacock’s current sports page advertises live sports, Sunday Night Football, Premier League coverage, and other sports programming, but current availability should not be projected backward as a guarantee of what was offered during the September 2025 negotiations.
News and business programming
The dispute was not limited to scripted shows and reality television. CNBC and MSNBC were among the networks identified in coverage. MSNBC has since been rebranded MS NOW. The current YouTube TV network directory lists CNBC and MS NOW, and MS NOW’s own help page says the service is available through YouTube TV.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
That current naming matters when searching YouTube TV’s guide. A reader looking for the former MSNBC channel may now need to search for MS NOW instead.
Entertainment
Bravo, USA, Syfy, E!, and Oxygen True Crime represented the entertainment side of the portfolio described in the final agreement. Losing those networks would have affected both live channel viewing and access to programming associated with those networks on YouTube TV. It would not necessarily have removed every episode or clip from every other platform.
Would saved DVR recordings have been deleted?
The public statements cited for the 2025 dispute did not clearly specify how every existing YouTube TV Library recording would have been treated if a network had gone dark.
A prolonged blackout could have raised questions about saved recordings, future recordings, and on-demand access, but it would be inaccurate to state categorically that all existing recordings would have been deleted—or that all would have remained playable—without a specific YouTube TV policy notice addressing that event. The companies’ public updates focused on access to the content and the possible $10 credit, not on a detailed recording-by-recording policy.

What options did subscribers have?
1. Stay on YouTube TV
Once the short-term extension was announced, immediately canceling YouTube TV was not necessary to avoid the predicted prolonged blackout. The extension was followed by a long-term agreement, so subscribers who waited retained access rather than having to switch services during the dispute.
The proposed $10 credit was conditional. YouTube described it as a contingency if the content was unavailable for an extended period; it was not an automatic payment to every subscriber merely because negotiations had been difficult.
2. Use Peacock for selected NBCUniversal programming
Peacock was the most obvious NBCUniversal-owned alternative for many viewers. Its current pages advertise NBC programming, live sports, Sunday Night Football, Premier League coverage, and Telemundo content through different offerings and rights arrangements:

As of the August 2026 update, Peacock’s official pages list Premium at $10.99 per month and Premium Plus at $16.99 per month. Those are current prices, not necessarily the prices available during the September 2025 dispute, and prices and plan features can change.
Peacock was not a perfect one-for-one substitute for the entire YouTube TV lineup. It could help with NBC, Telemundo, and selected sports and entertainment programming, but it should not automatically be assumed to replace every live feed from Bravo, CNBC, MS NOW, USA, Golf Channel, or the other networks in every plan and market.
3. Use an antenna for local NBC
An over-the-air antenna could provide a local NBC affiliate where reception was available. It would not replace the national cable networks involved in the dispute, including Bravo, CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, or Golf Channel.
Reception depends on distance from transmitters, terrain, buildings, antenna type, placement, and transmitter direction. AntennaWeb explains the main factors that affect local broadcast reception.

Subscribers could also have compared other live-TV services. That approach may preserve some or all of the affected channels, but it is not enough to rely on an old channel chart. Local coverage, sports rights, pricing, promotional rates, and regional availability change frequently. Check the provider’s current lineup using the subscriber’s ZIP code before switching.

“NBCUniversal channels” remains a useful description of the 2025 dispute, because NBCUniversal negotiated the broader distribution agreement. But current reporting needs to account for corporate and branding changes since then.
Versant completed its separation from Comcast in January 2026. Versant operates CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, Golf Channel, Oxygen, E!, and SYFY. Bravo remained with NBCUniversal, while NBC and Telemundo remained associated with NBCUniversal’s broadcast portfolio.
The more accurate current formulation is therefore: the 2025 dispute involved NBCUniversal’s broader YouTube TV distribution portfolio, including networks now operated by Versant. It is misleading to imply that every network affected in 2025 is still owned by NBCUniversal today.

MSNBC should also be written as MS NOW, formerly MSNBC, on first reference in an updated article. The MS NOW help center confirms YouTube TV as an available provider, and YouTube TV’s current network directory lists MS NOW.
Common ways the 2025 story gets misunderstood
- The date is mistaken for a current deadline. The original Tuesday deadline was September 30, 2025. It was not an August 11, 2026 removal date.
- The warning is mistaken for the outcome. The parties reached a short-term extension and then a long-term agreement. There was no prolonged NBCUniversal blackout resulting from that deadline.
- NBC content is treated as one single channel. The dispute concerned network carriage on YouTube TV, including local and national services, not the removal of all NBC-related videos from the regular YouTube platform.
- Every subscriber is assumed to have the same local NBC feed. Local availability depends on market and ZIP code.
- Every listed program is treated as permanently unavailable. A program’s live network feed, on-demand version, Peacock availability, local affiliate rights, and sports rights can differ.
- The $10 credit is described as automatic. YouTube described it as conditional on an extended loss of content.
- NBC Sports Network is listed as one of the channels threatened on September 30. Its announced return was a later feature of the final agreement.
- All networks are still described as NBCUniversal-owned. Several of the relevant networks are now operated by Versant, and MSNBC is now MS NOW.
What subscribers should check now
For a current YouTube TV subscriber, the practical checklist is short:
- Check the current YouTube TV network directory rather than relying on a 2025 article’s channel list.
- For NBC or Telemundo local service, verify availability using your home ZIP code.
- Search for MS NOW rather than MSNBC if looking for the former MSNBC channel.
- For a specific sports event or show, check its current network and streaming rights instead of assuming that all NBCUniversal programming follows the same distribution rules.
- Use Peacock or an antenna as targeted alternatives, recognizing that neither automatically replaces the entire YouTube TV package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did NBC channels actually leave YouTube TV on September 30, 2025?
No prolonged blackout resulted from that deadline. YouTube TV announced a short-term extension on September 30, and Google and NBCUniversal announced a long-term agreement on October 2, 2025.
Was there an NBC blackout scheduled for August 11, 2026?
The cited official updates do not identify an NBCUniversal blackout scheduled for August 11, 2026. On July 27, 2026, NBCUniversal and YouTube instead announced another multi-year extension of their YouTube TV distribution relationship.

Would an antenna replace NBCUniversal channels on YouTube TV?
An antenna may receive a local NBC affiliate if reception is available, but it does not replace cable networks such as Bravo, CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, or Golf Channel.
Was every YouTube TV subscriber eligible for the proposed $10 credit?
No. YouTube described the $10 credit as conditional if the content became unavailable for an extended period. It was not presented as an automatic credit for all subscribers.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The NBCUniversal blackout warning was real, but it belonged to September 30, 2025. A short-term extension and an October 2 long-term agreement prevented a prolonged removal, and the companies extended their relationship again in July 2026. NBC, Telemundo, major sports, news, and entertainment networks were at risk at the time, but subscribers do not currently have an official August 11, 2026 NBC blackout notice to act on.
