Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal is National Geographic’s three-part documentary about treasure hunter Tommy Thompson, the recovery of gold from the wreck of the SS Central America, and the legal and personal disputes that followed. Its account follows a dramatic arc, but the series’ language about deception and scandal is the network’s framing—not a finding that settles every contested claim.

What is Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal about?

The series follows Thompson’s expedition to the SS Central America, a ship that sank in 1857, and the disputes that continued after the wreck was located and its cargo recovered. National Geographic describes Thompson as recovering three tons of gold in 1989; that figure is the network’s description of the story, rather than an independently verified inventory in the available sources.

National Geographic presents the story as a 30-year journey from celebrated explorer to fugitive and prisoner. That is promotional framing. The underlying events include disputes over who was entitled to recovered treasure, later litigation involving investors, and legal consequences for Thompson.

The three episodes

  • “Impossible Riches”
  • “Follow the Money”
  • “The Manhunt”

The episode titles signal the series’ movement from the expedition and its discoveries toward the financial and legal fallout. The official synopsis describes the story in terms of adventure, deception, and personal turmoil; it should be read as the series’ characterization, not as an independent adjudication of every allegation.

Who is Tommy Thompson, and what happened after the recovery?

Thompson led the expedition associated with finding the SS Central America. Ars Technica’s 2024 account says the team found the wreck in 1988. National Geographic’s series announcement describes the recovery of gold in 1989.

According to Ars, insurers claimed rights to treasure recovered from the wreck. In 1996, a court awarded Thompson and the discovery team 92 percent of the gold they had recovered, the publication reports. That account describes a court outcome; it does not mean that every later dispute over the treasure was resolved by the ruling.

Investor litigation and the manhunt

Ars reports that investors later sued Thompson, that he fled in 2012, and that he was captured in 2015. The publication also says a court ordered him to turn over 500 commemorative coins. Thompson said he could not remember where he had put them, according to the report, and was incarcerated for contempt.

Those details come from 2024 reporting, not a current status check. They establish neither whether Thompson remains incarcerated in 2026 nor what has happened since that report. The series’ story is also contested: director Sam Benstead told Ars that the production had to condense a complex decades-long history and that some areas were strongly disputed. It is useful to distinguish reported events, court outcomes, and claims made by the people involved rather than treating the documentary’s dramatic arc as a complete legal record.
