John Wick’s signature car is a 1969 Ford Mustang: the film calls it a Boss 429, but the screen cars were built from Mach 1s. He also drives a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS in the first film, returns to the Mustang in Chapter 2, has no prominent muscle car in Chapter 3—Parabellum, and drives a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda in Chapter 4.

John Wick (2014): the Mustang and the Chevelle
1969 Ford Mustang: Boss 429 in the story, Mach 1 underneath
The Mustang is more than a getaway car. It is a surviving connection to Helen and the quiet life John hoped to protect. When Iosef Tarasov steals it, that loss helps pull John back into the criminal world.
Within the film, Iosef identifies the car as a Boss 429, and John confirms it is a 1969. That is the car’s story-world identity, not a reliable description of the camera cars. Production-oriented sources identify the screen cars as Mach 1-based builds modified with Boss-style details. Top Gear, Ford’s movie-focused Mustang feature, and the licensed John Wick’s Ford Mustang collection guide describe it as a Mach 1. So the clearest shorthand is: a fictional Boss 429 represented on screen by Mach 1-based Mustangs.
Director Chad Stahelski linked the car’s feel to classic American screen action, saying, “I love Steve McQueen-era stuff, and that’s kind of where we got the idea of the Mustang [for the first film].” (Top Gear)

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS: John’s replacement ride
While the Mustang is out of reach, John gets a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS from Aurelio’s shop. The Chevelle gives him transport as he pursues the stolen car; it does not replace the Mustang’s importance to the story.
Sources disagree on the Chevelle’s engine designation: automotive coverage has called it an SS 454, while GreenLight’s catalog labels a John Wick-associated collectible an SS 396. Without stronger production documentation, the defensible identification is simply 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. (Hagerty; GreenLight Collectibles)

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017): the Mustang returns
John begins the second film recovering the same 1969 Mustang stolen in the first. Its battered condition makes the car a visible reminder of the violence that disrupted his retirement. The Boss 429/Mach 1 distinction remains the same: Boss 429 is the in-film identification, while production references describe Mach 1-based screen cars.
John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum (2019): no prominent muscle car
Chapter 3 is the exception for muscle-car fans. It does not introduce a prominent classic American muscle car for John to drive. Its notable vehicle action instead centers on horses and motorcycles, including the bridge motorcycle chase highlighted in the official home-video material. Reeves and Stahelski also discussed the film’s lack of a muscle-car sequence in an interview with Actionfreunde.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023): the 1971 Plymouth Barracuda
The classic-car emphasis returns in Chapter 4 with a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. Director Chad Stahelski identifies it in Vanity Fair’s scene breakdown: “So John Wick stolen a 1971 Barracuda, a cool muscle car.” (Vanity Fair)
The Barracuda becomes the tool for the elaborate Paris car-fu sequence, including the driving around the Arc de Triomphe on the way toward Sacré-Cœur. Lionsgate’s production notes describe Wick taking control of a “banged up but lethal muscle car” and say Reeves trained extensively for the driving work.

The model named on screen should not be confused with a pristine factory car. Sound-production reporting says the finished-film Barracuda was assembled from three different cars and did not use a Mopar engine. It was a composite stunt build made for the demands of the sequence, not evidence of a factory-original 1971 Barracuda’s specifications. (A Sound Effect)

The Mustang connects John to Helen and to the life he lost; the Chevelle is practical transport during the first film’s pursuit. In the fourth film, the Barracuda is less a cherished possession than a weaponized tool for a tightly choreographed action set piece. Together, the cars draw on an old-school American muscle-car image that suits a character whose world mixes deliberate control with sudden violence.
